Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES (JIM) COOPER
With sadness, the family of James (Jim) Allen Cooper announces his passing on May 30, 2025, at the age of 78.
Predeceased by his father’s James R. Cooper and Robert Edwards, and mother Florence, Jim will be remembered with love by his wife of 54 years, Jocelyne; sons Robbie (Anne-Marie) and Steven (Andrea); and his much loved grandchildren Max, Molly, and Grady. Jim also leaves to cherish his memory sisters Gail Petrov (Nandor), Lorraine Lang (Rick), and brother Bob Edwards (Donna); sisters-in-law Andrée Paquin (Gérald), Odette Sabourin-North (Bruce), and Charlotte Sabourin; along with his many nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Born in Winnipeg, dad spent his early years between the cities of Winnipeg, Sudbury, and Thunder Bay before settling into life in his adopted hometown of Eriksdale, Manitoba. An avid golfer, dad was a fixture at the local course, always ready to play a round with his regular group – or he’d simply show up and play with whoever was waiting at the first tee. Curling, baseball, and fishing were other sports dad enjoyed participating in over the years.
It was in his professional life as an educator that dad connected with and contributed so significantly to Eriksdale and surrounding communities. As a teacher, and in retirement serving on the board of the Lakeshore School Division, dad dedicated almost 50 years of his life to ensuring the highest standard possible was set for generations of students in the area. He was passionate about ensuring that students in these smaller communities received the same standard of education as those in urban centres, and insisted on the same level of effort in return from his students.
But it was in retirement and in life as just ‘Grandpa’ where dad was most content. He so loved his grandkids (and grand-dogs) that it was never a surprise to see him make the hours long drive to show up unannounced at an auditorium, curling club, hockey arena or ball field to support or cheer on his grandkids in their activities – or volunteer to dog sit when the families were away.
Dad’s health concerns necessitated a move back to Winnipeg, and though the final months were difficult, we are thankful for the additional time we were all able to spend closer together as a family.
The family would like to thank CancerCare Manitoba for their compassionate treatment, as well as the Palliative unit at St. Boniface Hospital for helping make dad more comfortable at the end of his life. Special thanks and appreciation to Lynn & Laurie Torgerson, whose friendship and support have been such a blessing to both Jim and Jocelyne.
As per his wishes, no formal service will be held. A private graveside remembrance will be held at a later date.

My heartfelt condolences to the Cooper family. I have many memories from high school with Mr. Cooper and wished I had paid more attention in class but I’d like to think some things stuck. His sense of humour made high school much more enjoyable. RIP Mr. Cooper - Posted by: Leslie Perrin (Lundale) (Former Student) on: Jun 09, 2025

My thoughts and prayers are with the Cooper family. Mr Cooper was one of my favourite teachers. I also was fortunate to be his and Jocelyn’s babysitter for young Robbie in his younger years. It was always nice to run into Mr Cooper on my visits back to Eriksdale. May all the wonderful memories comfort you during this difficult time. - Posted by: Laurie Lundale (Student and Babysitter) on: Jun 09, 2025

To the Cooper Family. I was deeply saddened to hear about Jim. He was a truly wonderful person, my friend, teacher and daily golfing partner. I will always remember our Golf trips to Hecka Island, Gilbert Plains, and many rounds at Lundar Gold Course. Jim was with me when I got my hole in one. Who would ever think my High school teacher would become a Good Friend years later! He will be missed around the Golf course. Please accept my sincerest condolence Rick Clegg and Family - Posted by: Rick Clegg (Friend) on: Jun 08, 2025

I was a lazy student and in grade 10 signed up for the easier business Math. Mr Cooper, when hearing this called me to his office and we had the most important conversation of my life. He told me that I was more capable than I gave myself credit for and that he knew I could do it! I left his office signed up for university entrance math. When I finished his grad 12 math final exam he handed to me, shock my hand, and said, “now thats a pretty good credit to have”. Turns out my whole adult life was thanks to that credit! My secondary education and career would not have been possible without this! Thank you Jim, we have lost a tremendous teacher and friend, who will not be forgotten. - Posted by: Mark (Student) on: Jun 08, 2025

Mr. Cooper was my Math Teacher in about 1970 or 1971. I struggled in Math through my Elementary years. That all changed when I met Mr. Cooper. He had a way of explaining it that no one else had ever taught me. I could not get enough of Math, Thanks to Mr. Cooper. I went on to spend 26 years in the banking field and then another 13 years in a finance roll. I have told this story many times in my lifetime. Sometimes if you are lucky, you have that one person, that can turn your life into a success! Thank you Mr. Cooper! Rest in Peace. - Posted by: Karen Surgenor (Student) on: Jun 07, 2025
