PHILLIP WILLIAM GEILER

September 2, 1949 – February 4, 2025

Well, we all know who this fellow is — he's the man who loved to have his picture taken.

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our brother, uncle, and friend, the one-of-a-kind Phillip William Geiler, of Lethbridge, Alberta. Phil passed away peacefully on Tuesday, February 4, 2025, in Yuma, Arizona.

Phil was born on September 2, 1949, in Brandon, Manitoba, to Bill and Jackie Geiler (both deceased). He lived in Brandon most of his life until 2024, when he moved to Lethbridge.

From a young age, it was clear that school just wasn’t his thing — he'd much rather be outside playing with friends. Summers were for baseball; winters meant snow forts, skating, and snowball fights. He had an independent spirit early on, earning his own money delivering The Brandon Daily Sun.

Phil was happy when his school days came to an end. That’s when he joined his dad working at the Manitoba Motor Transit. In 1968, when the bus depot was sold, the two continued working together at the Shell Station on the North Hill. Later, Phil began a long career with the Canadian Pacific Railway, where he proudly retired in 2004 as a locomotive engineer — a role he took to heart. He even used the legendary name “Casey Jones” as an online moniker, embracing the rich history of railroading as part of his own story.

When he worked for CPR, he would always be busy, whether it was going for a skidoo ride, riding his motorcycle, golfing, and walking. Later he would enjoy going to the gym, where his favorite was the hot tub.

Retirement opened a new chapter. Phil spent winters in Yuma, Arizona, where he bought a mobile home and truly flourished. He loved golfing, relaxing, the hot tub, walking, riding his bike, and making new friends — and he was always encouraging family to come visit.

It was in Yuma where he met his devoted significant other, Rita Siegel, a beautiful soul. Phil and Rita spent six joyful years together. Rita told us that Phil was one of the kindest and most respectful gentlemen she has ever known. Rita helped Phil make hard days easier, good days ever better, and ordinary moments something to look forward to. Rita, the way you cared so consistently and so selflessly did not go unnoticed. A heartfelt thank you sister, our family forever. We appreciated you opening your door to us and all the support you gave us through this difficult time.

If you were looking for Phil, the first place to check was the golf course. He loved the game — and his enthusiasm quickly spread through the family. Phil always had a tip or a suggestion (and maybe a few opinions on the best clubs), and he was forever in search of that perfect club.

Phil had a big personality and an even bigger heart. He was funny, quick-witted, and a bit of a tease. He could be charming and cheeky in equal measure. He’d challenge you on your ideas, and he’d always be there if you needed help. He listened deeply, spoke wisely, and had a positive impact on so many lives.

Never one to sit still, Phil always had hobbies on the go. His love for golf led him to build his own clubs. He also explored locksmithing, scuba diving, and all things electronic and technology. He was endlessly curious.

To so many, he was known as Phil, bro, P.W., or just “the coolest uncle ever.” If you knew him, you knew he had a special place in his heart just for you. He built unique, meaningful friendships wherever he went — truly larger than life.

Phil shared a close bond with his second cousin, Scott Geiler, who we believe was like a son to Phil. Phil believed in what Scott stands for and truly loved him.

He had many good friends. Special thanks to those who supported Phil and our family over the past year:

Mike Weiss – thank you for continuing to check in on us and offering your help.

Kent Johnston – your support means so much.

Dave Hansen – thank you for getting Phil to Yuma last winter when he needed it most. Your hospital visits, your thoughtfulness (especially the Milky Way chocolate bars, Phil's favorite), and taking us out to Phil’s favorite karaoke bar, The Whiskey Road Saloon, helped us celebrate his life just as he would have wanted.

Brent (Yuma) – thank you for looking out for Phil and helping him get back to Canada for care last year. Thank you for visiting him at his time of need at home and in the hospital.

Renee (Yuma) – thank you so very much for your help in one of our most difficult times in our lives. You stepped in without hesitation. Your support during our crisis meant so much to us. We don’t know how we would have managed without you. Words cannot express how grateful we are.

Phil is lovingly remembered by his sisters Linda Church (Barry) and Nancy Beal (Jeff), Rita (soulmate) as well as his nieces and nephews:

Debbie (Dave) – his “greatest niece in the whole wide world” who always said he was the “Best Unk Ever in the Universe,” Lonnie, Jonathon (Joanne), Jeffrey, and Jud. Also remembering him are his great-nieces and nephews: Joel (Jane), Amara, Mia, Declan, Annie, Rowan, Zac, Dani, and Quinn.

Our heartfelt thanks to the staff at the Yuma Medical Centre for their care and compassion. Phil was so comfortable and well cared for in his final days.

He was dearly loved and will be sadly missed. As per Phil’s request, there will be no service.

As our bro would say: “The eagle has landed.” Rest in peace Phil.
