KENNETH DENBOW

Kenneth Larry Denbow was born on September 28, 1950, in the RM of Glenwood to Wilfred Earl (Scotty) and Rita Cecile (Bertholet) Denbow. He was the second eldest of eight children. Ken attended Deleau and Souris schools but left after Grade 8 to help on the family farm.

Ken met the love of his life, Sheryl Lynn Truax, and they married on September 14, 1974. They made their home on SE 23-7-23, the original homestead of Ken’s great-grandparents, a place he was very proud of. Together, they raised three children: Curtis (1976), Carrie (1980), and Tina (1984). A devoted family man, Ken took great pride in attending his children’s and grandchildren’s activities, from sports games and dance recitals to 4-H shows, Christmas concerts, and graduations. Holidays and family meals were especially dear to him, always full of laughter, love, and good food.

When Sheryl was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, Ken’s devotion shone through as he cared for her at home and continued visiting her frequently after her move to a care home. Ken was a true farmer at heart. He farmed with his father and brother David for many years and held a variety of other jobs, including fuel truck driving (ESSO, Shell, COOP), feedlot cleaning, work at Skylane Farms in Elgin, pig barns, and serving as landfill manager for the RM of Grasslands. He was always willing to help neighbors and friends in need. Known for his storytelling, contagious laugh, and strong opinions (with no filter or volume control), Ken loved socializing, whether playing cards with neighbors, chatting over coffee in town, or striking up a street conversation. He had a deep love for animals, especially cattle, horses, and dogs.

Ken faced numerous health challenges, including a triple bypass, heart attack, diabetes, and mobility issues. In December 2021, he moved to Alstone Lodge in Reston to be closer to family and for health reasons. Ken passed away at his residence on July 1, 2024, at the age of 73.

He was predeceased by his wife Sheryl, parents Scotty and Rita, brother David, and several in-laws. He is lovingly remembered by his children: Curtis (Shannon), Carrie (Calvin Mispelon), and Tina (Colin Walker); grandchildren: Taylor, Brody, Levi Denbow; Cloe, Erica Mispelon; Josh, Dylan, Mackenzie, Hayden, Memphis, and Quinnlynn Walker; great-grandchildren: Steven, Taz, Starbrit, Joseph, and Jayden; siblings: Cam (Wendy), Karen McDowell, Wilma (Greg) Morrison, Nina (Bill) Cowan, Tracy (Wes) Phillips, and Rhonda (Jen Holoien) Denbow; as well as many nieces, nephews, and friends. A celebration of Ken’s life was held on July 15, 2024, at the Hartney Centennial Centre with Joyce Marsh officiating. The service was followed by a reception featuring a meal Ken would have dreamed of.

Ken’s family extends heartfelt thanks to friends, extended family, the homecare team, doctors, the Alstone Lodge community, and Dexter and Val at Kovaluachuk’s for their care and support over the years. Special thanks also go to the ladies who prepared his dream lunch.
