RICHARD (DICK) ALLAN GIRDEN

After a lengthy illness, Dad passed away on July 1, 2025.

Born June 27, 1937, Dad and his siblings were raised in the Lord Roberts community. Married to Joan for 46 years, Dad's life was rooted in loyalty and love. Together they raised their three children in Fort Garry. They brought people in the community together with weekly movie nights for local kids in the basement of Donnelly United Church, and annual fireworks and corn roasts.

Dick served as Umpire-in-Chief for Fort Garry Minor Baseball and Referee-in-Chief for Winnipeg Minor Hockey for many years. In the face of tough calls and harder criticisms, he often said, "As an official, you may not always be right, but you can never be wrong." Dick was also the proud sponsor and supporter of South Pembina Esso Men's Slo-pitch Team.

Dick curled at the Pembina Curling Club, loved summers at Grand Beach, and enjoyed trips to Las Vegas.

Dad had a great sense of humor, was kind, and always willing to lend a hand. He loved all animals and was known to have dog cookies in his pocket in the event he saw a dog who needed a treat.

Dad's work ethic was second to none, which he instilled in his children. From his years as a service station manager to his time as a general contractor, he led by example with hard work, honesty and integrity.

He was predeceased by his wife Joan and is survived by his three loving children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grand-children. He will be forever missed.

A private family celebration of Dad's life will be held at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • So sorry for your loss Rick, Rob and Linda and all your families. So many wonderful memories of all the fun our families had at the Mansions. Your Dad was a true gentleman, hard worker and so community minded. Love and miss you all.❤️❤️❤️ - Posted by: Glenn Cordy (Friend) on: Jul 05, 2025

  • I grew up across the back lane from Dick and Joan and have so many memories of them growing up. From times spent at the Girden cottage to watching my dog Bear lose his mind any time Dick walked into our backyard. This makes me sad. He was always so nice, happy and laughing. My condolences go out to all of Dick’s friends and family. 😢 - Posted by: Andrew McBride (Neighbour) on: Jul 05, 2025

  • Me (Walter) and my wife, Phyllis, have known Dick, his wife Joan and Linda, it seems like forever. Soul Mates until the end of time. I will miss him dearly. We had so many (too many to mention) good times. Dick always had a smile on his face and a funny pun to make us laugh. He was a great helper in the kitchen, if not washing the dishes then drying them. He loved animals and made sure that the animals in the house always had food in their bowl and water to drink. When I first learned of Dick's passing it touched me deeply, and I couldn't help but have a good cry. I'll miss you buddy. - Posted by: Walter Blahut (My son Myles' father-in-law and and his wife Linda's father.) on: Jul 05, 2025

  • Dick and Joan were dear neighbors and friends of my parents when I was growing up. We were blessed to spend many good times together both at home and at their cottage in Grand Beach. A favorite memory is one Christmas Eve when Santa Claus appeared at my front door. I was sure it was Dick but a phone call to Joan convinced me that I was wrong. Boy I was gullible! My Condolences to Dick’s family. - Posted by: Tracy Gumprich (Former neighbour) on: Jul 05, 2025
