GARY EDWARD GRANKE


After a five year battle with cancer, surrounded by the love of his family, Gary Granke passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

Gary is survived by his wife of 45 years Naomi Granke (nee Johnson) and their two children, Carl and Reid Granke(Katie Lavoie). Gary is also survived by his uncle Ken Hibbert, brother Robert Granke (Lynn), sister Elaine Gelhorn, brother-in-law Nathan Johnson (Eva), sisters-in-law Deborah Johnson and Rachel Johnson (Dale Conrad). He will be missed by several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.

Gary was predeceased by his parents Harold and Patricia Granke (Hibbert), Aunt Florence Granke, brothers-in law Bruce Gelhorn, Reuel Johnson, and sister-in-law Rebekah Johnson.

Gary was born and raised in Winnipeg. He worked for the City of Winnipeg for several years in various departments including Urban Forestry, Dutch Elm Disease Program, and Planning and Development.

Gary loved the outdoors. He enjoyed camping and fishing (both fresh water and ocean fishing). He enjoyed watching football, especially the CFL. He rarely missed watching the games on tv. Gary was also an avid cribbage player. He enjoyed volunteering at Loaves and Fishes food bank in Nanaimo as well as volunteering at Hope Lutheran Church in Nanaimo.

Gary was also a person of faith. He was a long time member of Grace Lutheran Church in Winnipeg, and an active member of Hope Lutheran Church in Nanaimo once he and Naomi relocated to Nanaimo.

Gary's family would like to thank the team of medical professionals who cared for Gary over the last several years. From surgeons, family physician, oncologists, radiologists, nurses and health care aides, your skill, kindness, professionalism and dedication are amazing.

A celebration of life service will be held on Friday, July 11 at Grace Lutheran Church, 211 Kimberly Avenue, Winnipeg. Live streaming via Grace Lutheran Church website.
