BRIGITTE (GITTY) SCHLUDERMANN
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brigitte (Gitty) Schludermann, age 85, on June 25, 2025, in her home in Hornsea, East Yorkshire, England.
Brigitte was born on December 17, 1939, in Vienna, Austria. In 1955, she immigrated with her family to Winnipeg, Canada.
There, Brigitte was part of the skiing community: at age 16, she won the Canadian Junior Alpine Championship and continued to ski for Manitoba. In 1960 she received her B.A. Honours in German and French at McGill University and in 1965 her M.A. in German and French at the University of Manitoba, where she taught German from 1965 to 1974.
She then began her studies of Medieval Linguistics in German and Dutch in Utrecht, the Netherlands, in Ghent, Belgium, and at the University of Cambridge, England, where she received her PhD in 1980. In 1979 she moved to Aachen where she taught Dutch at the Technical University. In 1988, Brigitte was named Professor of Dutch Studies at the University of Hull, Kingston upon Hull, England. She retired in 2005.
Once she had left Manitoba, she continued to keep close ties with its academic community. She also came back almost every summer to spend time with family and friends in Winnipeg and at the family’s cottage at West Hawk Lake.
Brigitte will be deeply missed by her many friends and her family: brother Eduard Schludermann, of Winnipeg, Canada, sister Ulrike Rettig and husband Peter of Watertown, MA, USA, sister-in-law Velma Schludermann, of Hillsboro, OR, USA, her six nieces and nephews and their families; also her dear friend of more than 60 years, Marijse Westehuis.
Brigitte had an intense joie de vivre and an open, curious mind. She loved to travel and will be remembered as a kind and generous friend to all.
No formal service will be held.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to CancerCare.

My husband and I were part of the West Hawk Lake friend group, a diverse group all of whom shared Gitty’s love of the area. Gitty encouraged me to swim out in the lake, to canoe, to hike (not a lot of success there), to eat vegetarian and to converse with confidence. Time with Gitty was fun and stimulating. I am glad I knew her. She will always be there at the lake. - Posted by: Judi Bewer (Friend) on: Aug 10, 2025

I knew Brigitte as Ulrike's older sister, as well as my professor of German at the University of Manitoba. Early in my career as a lecturer of French at the University of Winnipeg. I was flying to France on a a chartered plane full of University people- professors and students alike. My plan was to spend a few days in Cambridge, where Brigitte was working on her PhD, before heading to Bordeaux to work on my own research. Soon after boarding the plane in Toronto, we were informed that we would have to disembark. Due to mechanical issues, the plane would not be departing until the next morning. All of us spent the night at a hotel along the airport strip and arrived at Heathrow the following day. And to my surprise, there was Gitty! She had waited for me at the airport that whole time! I then realized what an exceptional human being she was! Rest in peace, dear professor and friend. - Posted by: Anne Marie Kanert (nee Zeller) (friend) on: Aug 08, 2025

I remember her as a wonderful skier. I was a young racer and the Schludermann girls were my idols! - Posted by: Nancy Higgitt (Skiing) on: Jul 20, 2025

Many thanks for my academic achievements mentally and latterly pyschically. I was a member of Hull University B.A. Hons Dutch 2:2 and i had her luck because I first meet her at a informal University Interview at University of Cambridge at Sedgewick Avenue. I enjoyed her company as helped me in successful years at Hull and a wonderful year at the Catholic University of Leuven. Latterly I thought of her as I continued my pyschical education with Sandwell Triathlon Club after meeting Commonwealth Swimmer Team England at Bushy Fields Mental Hospital as a bank nurse, who helped me with getting back to normality I am deeply and emotionally sorry for any pain my Gluten Psychosis caused. These days I still think of her especially during my Para-Hybrid Aquathlon Athlete Training at Sandwell Aquatics Triathlon Club and The local Fitness Factory, Stourbridge. Birgitte was always there for advice at University and I loved her story of skiing for Canada. I help me with the pain caused by the gap of missing my sister Hannah Victoria Smith Team GBR Triathlon. Sorry I missed you when I applied this year for UCAS. Your are a shining star especially for someone from a children home for fifteen years. - Posted by: Michael Leslie Burson (Pupil) on: Jul 17, 2025
