Aganetha Dyck (née Rempel) passed away on July 18, 2025.
She was born on September 12, 1937, in Marquette, Manitoba, the eldest child of Jacob and Suzie (Bock) Rempel. She is survived by her children Michael, Deborah, and Richard; daughter-in-law Tricia Wasney; and sisters Elsie (Dave) Letkeman and Irene Friesen. She was predeceased by her husband Peter (2020), her younger brother Jack (2015), and her daughter-in-law Diane Johnstone (2024).
In her late thirties, Aganetha began her art career. It's not possible here to cover the breadth of her artistry. Her work has been displayed and celebrated internationally and is in the collections of major galleries and museums, including the National Gallery of Canada.
Aganetha received many awards and honours, including the Manitoba Arts Award of Distinction, and the Canada Council's Governor General's Award for Visual and Media Arts. She also participated in numerous residencies and the Manitoba Arts Council's Artists in Schools program. Over the years, Aganetha was a mentor to many artists.
She married Peter when they were both in their very early twenties. She loved him dearly, and he her.
A celebration of Aganetha and Peter's lives will take place on Thursday, August 7, 2025, 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Plug In ICA, 460 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg. Peter passed away during the COVID lockdown and it was Aganetha's wish to celebrate their lives together. It will be a come-and-go event.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to your favoured charity or one of Aganetha's, such as Mentoring Artists for Women's Art (MAWA), Art City, or Prairie Fire magazine.

Sincere condolences to Aganetha’s family. Aganetha was one of a kind. I thank the gods that I knew her. She was kind, generous and funny. I haven’t room here to tell you of all the ways and what she did to help me on my art adventure. Her advice and inspiration were central for me. She helped give me permission to be myself in my art. She and Peter came all the way to our farm in southwest Manitoba for Murray and my 50th in 2014. I loved your mum. Hold memories close as you say goodbye. My sympathies to all. - Posted by: Shirley Brown (Friend and colleague) on: Jul 28, 2025

I feel an enormous debt to Aganetha Dyck, though she would probably bristle to hear that. She was just so incredibly generous, with her time, her enthusiasm, her artistic ideas, her supplies (she gave me the last car trunk full of buttons!), her hospitality, her feminism, her humour, and her belief in me as an artist and friend. My heart goes out to her family who she adored. Aganetha's life was a great gift to so many. - Posted by: Lois Klassen (Mentee (1987,88) and friend) on: Jul 26, 2025

Dear Michael, Deborah and Richard and family. Erich and I would like to extend our sincerest condolences on the loss of your dear mom. I met her a few times and was always very intrigued by her spunk and her amazing artistic talent. We attended one of her art displays when it came through Calgary. Hold on to all the precious memories you have with her and your dad. Wishing you great peace and comfort in the days and weeks to come. Aganetha was the kind of person that we all should strive to be like (when we grow up ;) - kind, generous, authentic, whose impact on the artworld as well as all of us who worked in it is immeasurable. I loved working with her when I was a curator at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, I treasured the studio visits and our talks. She was loved and will be dearly missed and never forgotten. Her work lives on as does her spirit. My sincere condolences to the family. - Posted by: Shirley Madill (Friend and colleague, mostly friend) on: Jul 24, 2025
