JOHN FEFCHAK C.D.

June 10, 2025

We bid a fond farewell to John – a beloved friend, father, grandfather and uncle, a storyteller, and tireless advocate for the environment and all that is right in the world.

He will be missed by daughter Judie (Ron), granddaughters Andrea (Matt) and Amy. He also leaves his sister Dora (Tony) as well as sister-in-law Hilda. Also surviving is Florence, his former wife and mother to Judie.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife Norma, sister Annie and brothers Joe and Mike, along with sisters-in-law Mary, Doris and Anne.

Born in 1933 in the R.M. of Pipestone to parents Andrew and Barbara, the family eventually moved to the Virden area where he spent his youth. At the age of 17 he took the bus to Brandon and joined the RCAF, leading to a 31 year career where he had many adventures and made lifelong friends. As a crewman with 108 Communications Flight he flew on helicopters working on the Mid-Canada radar installations across the North. It was then he met and married his first wife in 1956. By 1970 he was based at Air Transport Command in Trenton Ontario. He enjoyed his job there, dealing with the maintenance and comings and goings of Boeing 707 and Hercules aircraft. In his words, it was “the best of times.” He met his wife Norma (Tibbits), the couple married and soon after headed west on a transfer to Moose Jaw. There he served as senior technical co-ordinator for the Snowbirds. He retired in 1982 as Chief Warrant Officer, returning to Virden where they lived out their final years in the house they built—a home full of love and memories of family and friends.

  • John Fefchak was an officer and a gentleman! In 2005 My sister Lois and I were working with our community of Ninga to stop a 10,000 factory feeder pigs from going into the neighbourhood. I was following a writer in the Free Press who seemed to understand how wrong it was to run huge numbers of pigs in confinement factories! He was from Virden and I phoned him! John Fefchak helped us and put us in touch with others. We became friends as well as activists to protect our water , soil , air and to beg for humane treatment of the pigs! John was an incredible writer and I often told him he wrote like a journalist! He worked tirelessly to try and make a difference. I truly feel John Fefchak should be nominated for the Order of Manitoba! Earth has lost a Gem but Heaven is graced with John Fefchak’s presence. - Posted by: Bonnie Nay (Friend) on: Aug 07, 2025
