ANTONIO (TONY) ALVES

October 12, 1945 - July 15, 2025

It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Antonio (Tony) Alves on July 15, 2025, with his family by his side.

He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Helen, his children Lisa and Anthony, Brother-in-law Andrew, his sister Lizete (Manuel), two nieces Ivete and Lilia, nephew Helder, and numerous friends and family in Winnipeg and Portugal.

He had a great love for the sport of soccer where he played, coached, and refereed along with his son Anthony. Antonio also loved to travel with family especially back home to Portugal where he would spend a few months during the summer.

Tony worked many different jobs during his life from Winnipeg Hydro, Winnipeg Police department where he eventually retired. He later worked for Shell as a way to stay busy.

Dad had a heart of gold always giving a helping hand. From Spring teas at the church, to donating most of the furniture in our Portugal apartment to people who had came from the Ukraine with nothing.

He was an amazing, wonderful man/father who would always be there for you no matter what for hugs, talks or just to listen.

Funeral liturgy will take place on Saturday, August 23, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. The interment will be at All Saints Cemetery at a later date. The celebrant will be Fr. Zachary Shawluck OSBM.

The family invites everyone for a time of fellowship and refreshments at Korbans.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Tony and I were good friends since all our years in high school. I was also friends with Helen in high school where they began dating. Emilio was also part of our friendship group. I was shocked to hear the sad news. My deepest Condolences to Helen and the kids. Very sincerely, Bill Bell. - Posted by: Bill BELL (Good Friend) on: Aug 22, 2025

  • So sorry Helen and Family for your loss. Shocked to hear the news. I learned a lot from Tony after becoming President of Northwest Youth Soccer and was proud that he supported and nurtured me through all of the things required to run the Organization. A tireless worker and leader who will be missed by all! - Posted by: Bob Cowie (Friend) on: Aug 18, 2025

  • To Lizete & family: I remember very well the 'immigrant-friendship' of our youth struck with Antonio in those early days in the Bannatyne Ave area, only to meet his sister in later years as colleague at what was once Royal Bank, Wm & Sherbr Br. So sad for your loss, my heartfelt sympathies to all the family - Tony Garofalo. - Posted by: Antonio 'Tony' Garofalo (Friend) on: Aug 16, 2025
