MATTHEW ETCHES

Matthew Etches died peacefully at home, accompanied by his loved ones, on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, in his 52nd year.

He was predeceased by his beloved mother Merryl Etches. Matthew is survived by his partner Michelle Owens and her children, Devon Owens (Evan Ottoni) and Ewan Simeon and his adored rescue dog Lulu.

Matthew's passion for cinema guided both his career and personal life. He was a champion of Winnipeg filmmaking and worked in film and television production, film distribution, and film festival programming. Matthew was deeply committed to the Winnipeg arts community, and loved experimental film and music.

Matthew was guided by his principles and grounded in his yoga practice. He cherished skating on the Assiniboine and Red River trails, and time at the cottage in Sandy Hook. Matthew's creativity and attention to detail was expressed in recent years in his large scale Lego MOC project of the Death Star.

Honouring Matthew's wishes, cremation has taken place and a private celebration will be held.

In his memory, donations may be made to the Jaimz Admundson Memorial Fund at the Winnipeg Film Group:

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I found out today that my best friend from high school died. I am saddened and shocked to hear this. My condolences to Michelle, who I have not met. I spent my formative years with Matt. Together we learned that things could be different. The music we listened to, the movies we watched, the art we consumed and the people we surrounded ourselves with. His heart was big and he always seemed to care about the "little guy" or the disadvantaged. I lost touch with Matt about 20+ years ago but would often think about him. We went to so many concerts together and had such good times. I don't think I would be the person I am today if I had not met Matt at Golden Gate Junior High. We spent 5 solid years beside each other and because of that I am a better person. I'll miss you Matt. - Posted by: Shane Humphrey (Old Friend) on: Aug 27, 2025

  • I knew Matthew as a child, about 10 years old, on visits to Sandy Hook with his Mom. He was a great kid, especially as he always loved to hear my travel adventure "spy" stories! I sadly lost contact with his Mom, but have thought of them often. I'm not surprised he went into the film business, as he had such an inquisitive and engaging mind. I was sorry to read of the death of Matthew at such a young age, and also the death of his Mom before that. My sincere condolences to you and your family, Michelle, in your pain at his loss. - Posted by: Hedie Epp (Co-worker and Friend of Matthew's Mom, Merryl) on: Aug 24, 2025

  • Dear Michelle. I’m so sorry to hear that Matthew has died. He was a such a special soul. He was so devoted to his mom. We were especially impressed with the support he gave her following her disastrous burn, but he was there for her in so many ways. Sending gentle thoughts to you and your family. - Posted by: Lynn Baker (Friend of Matthew’s mother) on: Aug 23, 2025
