With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Olga Kostelnyk, on September 23, 2025, at the age of 97 years.
She will be lovingly remembered by her six children, Tom (Angele), Terry (Sandra), Deloris (Ric), Peter (Tanice), Karen and June (Peter); 14 grandchildren, Richard (Janice), Jennifer (John), Justin (Claudia), Leonard, Richard (Bonnie), Alicia (Paul), Kyle (Jenn), Aaron (Christine), Patty (Ted), Chloe (Jo), Graeme (Katerina), Jacob, Johnathan (Laura) and Nicholas; 14 great-grandchildren, Jasmine (Mike), Rhade, Axton, Jaxen, Mya, Alessia, Liam, Mackenzie, Bailey, Gavin, Mason, Violet, Jackson and Ava, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbours.
Olga was predeceased by her husband John, and sisters, Anne Sowiak and Mary Skwarchuk.
Olga was born and raised in the Van Dusen area near St. Martin, MB and she always shared many stories with us about her younger days. After her mother Pauline passed away in 1946, she moved to Winnipeg briefly and worked at Eaton’s. She then moved back to help her father on the farm. Her father Tom continued to live with her and her family until he passed away at the age of 91.
Olga met John in 1947 when he came to Canada after the war, and they were married on March 6, 1948. They raised six children and had a busy life on the farm, while also being active members of the community in St. Martin and Gypsumville. They retired from farming in the mid-1980s and looked after the St. Martin Community Club for a number of years.
In 2000, they decided to move to Ashern. It was a big change for them after having lived on the farm for so many years, but they adapted very well. Mom enjoyed being part of the community and continued to volunteer at bingo right up until this week, as well as attending the seniors’ get-togethers every week. We take great comfort knowing that her last day was spent with her friends at a legion event.
Mom was still living in her own home when she passed away. We’d like to send a heartfelt thank you to Mom’s next door neighbours, Debbie Birch and Margaret Anderson, for their friendship, kindness and support. We’d also like to thank all those who picked her up for bingo, seniors and other events, as she really loved getting out and seeing other people.
Mom was the heart of our family. Her warmth and kindness shone through in everything she did, and she made each of us feel so very special. We all loved spending time with her in person and on our daily phone calls. She cheered us on, gave us advice when we needed it, and was always there for us. She was a gem. Her memory will live on in our hearts forever and she will be dearly missed.
A Memorial Service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 3, 2025, at the Ashern Legion Hall, 3 Main Street East, Ashern, MB with a luncheon to follow.
If so desired, donations may be made in Olga’s memory to St. Martin Cemetery, c/o Corleen Halkowich, PO Box 17, St. Martin, MB R0C 2T0 or to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #57, c/o Frances Defoort, Box 781, Ashern, MB R0C 0E0.
