James Sanger McEwen died peacefully on August 24, 2025.
Jamie, Jame or Big Guy (to a select few who could get away with it), had two primary loves in life - his family and Lake of the Woods. Jamie married Linda Johnson in Gladstone, Manitoba in 1969. They lived in Winnipeg where they had two children, Grant (Sarah) and Sandy. He was a fixture at the rinks, arenas and courts; always supportive. It is hard to imagine a prouder 'Pappy' to his five grandchildren - Skylar, Finn, Logan, Kai and Hadley, for their accomplishments be they earned, genetic or imagined.
Jamie’s own accomplishments were numerous, from coaching elite swimmers to a career that culminated as the president of a trucking company. He retired in 1998 and soon moved to Kelowna, BC, though winters were in Hawaii and summers, of course, at Lake of the Woods. He spent his first 83 summers on LOTW; Alzheimer’s robbed him of the last two. A self-taught carpenter, with a highly creative mind, he dedicated much of his life to building and expanding his beloved Lake of the Woods cottage. He was an accomplished woodworker, with endless projects, but always had time for water sports, a good card game, and to fish with family and friends. He often said that he was at the "most beautiful spot on the most beautiful lake in the world". He was generous and loved a good laugh, even if he was the subject. In 1964 he and some fellow fraternity brothers from Beta Theta Pi won University of Indiana’s Little 500 bike race; however, if you ever spent any time with Jamie, you likely already knew that.
As per James wish, there will be no formal service held.
