Pooi-Leng Wong passed away peacefully on August 28, 2025, at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Pooi-Leng, or PL as many knew her, was born in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia to parents who moved there from China. She spent her childhood years living near the edge of a jungle where she happily explored nature when she wasn't attending school. Her parents, wishing for her to have a better education and more life opportunities, arranged for her to emigrate to Canada. At the age of 16, she travelled to Unionville, Ontario to live with her aunt's family while finishing high school and working in the family store. It was there, also, that she became a diehard fan of the Toronto Blue Jays and Maple Leafs.
PL studied biology at the University of Guelph and received a master's degree from Lakehead University for her research on parasites of shorebirds. PL found work at the Freshwater Institute in Winnipeg where she impressed many with her passion, intelligence, discipline and sense of humour. Her retirement afforded her more time to pursue her diverse interests and passions among them birding, Tai Chi, painting, gardening, sourdough bread making, and of course, watching sports.
PL will be dearly missed by friends and family in Canada, China, Malaysia and Australia.
As per PL's wishes, cremation has taken place.
