ALAN PAKARNYK

September 29, 1946 - October 2, 2025

Drop in Wake Sunday October 12 at 2:00 p.m. till later. 225 Symington Road R2C 5J7, Access via Hwy 1 or Plessis Road (construction on Dugald).

Alan was a talented artist from childhood on, Animator of beautiful visions and dreams.

Beloved and dedicated stepdad to his daughters Jolyn and Lainie Hoogstraten. He was the person who was there for them during their growing up lives, always demonstrating a life in art and joy of beauty.

His delight of life at large, kind and gentle attitude, and his playful and goofy personality were a joy for all who got to spend time with him though many many family dinners, holiday feasts, and celebrations.

He was always Geedo to the girls and their partners: Dino D'Ottavio, Russell Morden and Paul Lukeman, as well as his grandchildren Morgan Hoogstraten, Sage Hoogstraten, Ripley Hoogstraten Morden (Lexi Greening), and Lino D'ottavio as well as his precious great-granddaughter Maeve.

His brother Walter, sister Lovie and especially brother Sam were important and loving mentors and guides throughout his life.

He was an invaluable partner and amazing builder, creating a special art-filled artwork of a home built with love and inspiration as it evolved.

His animations for the National Film Board (Carried Away https://share.google/KoSvIUbpB17k3xnnD and Terra https://collection.nfb.ca/film/terra_en) have been screened worldwide and are available on the NFB website for anyone to access under Alan Pakarnyk.

My favorite person on the planet will live on in his art, animations and those who knew him.

  • A great loss. My condolences to Vonnie and family. I will always remember visiting your amazing home with my father. Watching Alan’s work. He once asked me NOT to touch his computer while he was in the midst of executing. It was hard because it was so intriguing, but I listened…. Will always be in awe of how cool Vonnie and Alan are! The animation will forever be an inspiration to me and so many others! I’m glad he had a show a year ago. It was beautiful. Thank you for your art. Have fun creating up there, Alan! - Posted by: Ivy Stampnick (Family friend) on: Oct 05, 2025

  • My wife JoAnne and I were deeply saddened to hear the news of Alan’s passing. We send our sincere condolences to Vonnie and family. Alan and I met at the School of Art and always enjoyed whatever time we were able to spend together over the years. He was generous, gentle, kind and an extremely talented artist. He will be missed. - Posted by: Bill Putko (Friend) on: Oct 04, 2025
