Katherine (Kathy) Lynn DeRoo (nee Mosiuk) passed away suddenly on October 4, 2025, in Brandon, Manitoba. She was 70 years old.
Born in Pembrooke, Ontario, to Michael (Mike) and Kathleen (Kay) Mosiuk on January 18, 1955 to a military family with two sisters and two brothers, Kathy spent her childhood living in Ontario, Germany, and then finally Brandon, Manitoba, where she went to school at Vincent Massey High School.
Known for her quick wit, love of her family, and unrelenting work ethic, Kathy worked with her husband, Lauren (Laurie) Charles DeRoo (predeceased, 2013) to setup the Brandon, Manitoba-based business DeRoo Plumbing and Heating. Kathy’s previous experience working in banking helped set up a successful entrepreneurial enterprise that was well regarded throughout Brandon and WestMan. She also was a committed member of various volunteer committees for youth hockey, the Royal Canadian Sea Cadets, and with the Brandon Wheat Kings. After Laurie’s passing, she later worked at Obermaier’s Meat Shops in Brandon, where she was well regarded as a reliable and cuttingly hilarious employee and friend to co-workers and customers alike.
Kathy had, and often exceeded at, her many hobbies including golf, fishing, and spending time camping and enjoying the great outdoors. She was very close with her mother and spent much of her time camping with her sister and best friend, Sandy and her family. She enjoyed hosting family and friends for meals, campfires. She was well known for entertaining at Christmas time, where, in true Ukrainian fashion, “overdo DeRoo” would end up hosting the family, extended family on both sides, friends, and other strays around the holidays, with more mouths to feed than table space in the house. But she always made room and time for friends on these special occasions. She also always had a special spot in her heart for her (and anyone else’s) dogs over the years. An avid sports fan and athlete herself, Kathy was a regular in the Westman sports (especially golfing) community, loved watching movies, was an extremely avid reader, and was always listening to music.
Kathy was a loving wife to Lauren Charles DeRoo (predeceased, 2013), who she met after high school at a drive through movie. They shared many adventures, with the young couple enjoying joyriding on his motorbike, sans helmet, or in his beloved Chevy SS, with their first dog, Shep. And later in life, with their family camper, road tripping across the prairies and northern US.
She is survived by her three children and their spouses, Andrea Dawn DeRoo (sp. Amanda Sowiak), Aaron Michael DeRoo (sp. Bryanne DeRoo), and Justin Francis DeRoo (sp. Aynsley DeRoo) and grandchildren Logan Alexandar Charles DeRoo and Violet Evelyn Harper DeRoo. Her surviving siblings include Sandra “Sandy” Lesage (sp. Denis Lesage), Patrick Wayne Mosiuk (sp. Sheilah), and Michael “Mike” Shane Mosiuk (sp. Sharon) and she is predeceased by her sister, Kristine “Kris” Mary Carter and her spouse, Brian Carter. She will also be missed by the families of lifelong friends, Dee Fuhr and Claire Burke, of Brandon, Manitoba and by her late husband’s family.
A Celebration of Kathy’s Life will be held on Sunday, November 2, 2025 at 2:30 p.m., at the Spirit Sands Trailhead, near Spruce Woods Provincial Park. Kathy touched a lot of lives, and those wishing to pay their respects are encouraged to reach out to family members for further information. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to support the family are encouraged to donate to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB, R7A 7M6.
