Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJOHN PRENTICE
John passed away softly in tender, skillful hands of the Riverview East Palliative team.
His family crooned John home with “Wild Mountain Thyme”. Our dear John was a revered champion of numerous musicians; kind, sage Dad to Heather, Alex, Ian, and Laura Brereton (Silas); dedicated brother to Jackie Fras (Mary and Kim), (Chelsea, Sadie-Jane, and John); and loving partner to Lynn McLean.
A photo biography honouring John’s life is accessible through the 'tributes' link below.

When I wrote about late remarkable Oscar Brand, known for his ribald rugby-type songs, who called himself a Winnipegger all his long life, John in Free Press and in emails helped get Oscar aclaimed. When I supported other local artists, John often appeared in his own personal compliments. I would have liked to see John in my last months before I closed my Winnipeg office-home end SEPT. Condolences to Lyn and John's many friends and family members. We are grateful for his lively community connections. - Posted by: Denzil FEINBERG (Friend in music) on: Nov 09, 2025

I will miss this man very much. It's hard to process that this spirit is no longer just a phone call away. Lots of good memories, lots of images bubbling up in my mind's eye, triggered by random things. - Posted by: ROSEMARY HNATIUK (VERY CLOSE FRIEND) on: Nov 04, 2025

Heaven now has a Yoga Taxi to drive angels hither, thither, and yon. John was one of the kindest, sweetest people I'd ever had the good fortune to meet. His heart was bigger than he was. I was so shocked to read his obituary in Saturday's Free Press; I had no idea that he was ill, let alone in palliative care. Lynne, please be comforted by memories of the years you were blessed to share with John. Yr. unrepentant piano player, Yvette, the Ovaries on the Ivories. - Posted by: Yvette Berger (friend) on: Nov 02, 2025

Very sorry for your troubles, Lyn and family. Thanks to Victor Dobchuk and folk music, my path crossed with John's off and on for years. He was a good person whose enthuasiasm for music, with a leftie eye on life, made a difference. - Posted by: Dorothy Wigmore (Friend) on: Nov 01, 2025

Sad to hear that John has left this world. An incredibly kind man, a masterful producer/director, and obviously a music fan who shared his gifts and talents with so many. I had the privilege to have been at Videon along with John and many other talented staff between 1986-93 and his grace, humor, and technical savvy were gifts I will hang on to from that era. It was truly a pleasure and a privilege to have known him...R.I.P. John... - Posted by: John Davies (appreciative student of television production under John) on: Nov 01, 2025
