ELAINE DIANA MAY PARENT
Elaine Diana May Parent, age 72, of Winnipeg, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, October 29, 2025. She was born June 6, 1953, in Whitehorse, Yukon, to Norah and William Downey.
Elaine was an enormous Doctor Who fan. She would regularly attend Keycon in Winnipeg with friends and family members and was an avid collector of all sorts of different pop culture items. She was fiercely loyal to those close to her and was especially proud of her children. She had a momma bear quality to her that extended to friends of her children, and she often took on a parental role in her grandchildren’s lives. Elaine also had a strong taste in music. She regularly listened to The Moody Blues and loved relaxing to classical music. She was also very proud of her time in the Canadian military, something she was always happy to talk about with anyone that would listen.
Elaine was predeceased by her parents, William and Norah Downey.
Elaine is survived and deeply mourned by her sons Patrick Downey, Daemon Parent (Vanessa), and Erin Parent (Nicole). She is survived by her seven grandchildren, (Patrick) Leah, Kyra, PJ, (Daemon) Madissyn, Jovie, Maxime, and Oaklin. She is also survived by her seven great-grandchildren. (Leah) Ethan, Gavin, Olivia, (Kyra) Devlin, Auria, Mercedes, and Rose.
Elaine is survived by her brothers Jim Downey (Helen), Kerry Downey (Ingrid); and sister Cheryl Downey. She is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
There will be a private family service for the interment which will take place at Brookside Cemetery in Winnipeg. And a Celebration of Life will also happen in the late spring/early summer to allow for family members to travel to attend.
A special thank you to Wojcik’s Funeral Chapel for the incredible support and care provided.
In lieu of flowers, consider donating to causes that she championed. This can include any Royal Canadian Legion nearby, or to a humane society of choice. Mom did love her kitties!

My mom, Vivian, has been one of Elaine’s closest friends for over 40 years, so I grew up knowing both her and her son, Erin. What I’ll always remember and appreciate most about Elaine is how unapologetically herself she was—and how, in all the years I knew her, she never showed me anything but kindness. She was such a great storyteller, the kind who could make even an ordinary moment sound like an adventure. And of course, her love for her cats was legendary—they were truly part of her family. The Doctor Who mention feels especially fitting, because my earliest memory of meeting Erin was at a social where he drew me a picture of a Dalek. I’m pretty sure that drawing is still floating around somewhere at my mom’s house. Elaine’s love for Doctor Who clearly rubbed off on him, and it’s just one small reflection of how deeply she cared for the people (and pets) she loved. She will be deeply missed. My heartfelt condolences to her family and to everyone whose life she touched. - Posted by: Stephan Geissler (Family Friend) on: Nov 09, 2025

Worked several years with Elaine at an office building downtown. She was always a true friend and after we both stopped working had several regular phone calls. She was very equally proud of all her children and of Leah her granddaughter. Condolences to all her family. Gary Deluca - Posted by: Gary Deluca (Former coworker friend) on: Nov 08, 2025

My condolences to Family and Friends. She made friends from all walks of life and was very generous and kind to everybody. She loved all the kitties. She loved all creatures great and small. I like to think of her sitting under a tree at the rainbow bridge reading one of her favorite books to the pets who are there on her journey to the other side. She would give them pats and kisses and hugs. I think of her reuniting with those she loved and missed on the other side. As much as she loved others she was also loved. She will be missed. My friend for 50 years rest well you are missed. I’m still so shocked that you are suddenly gone. You may be gone but we have so many wonderful memories that comfort me. Until we meet again. ❤️ Vivian Meyer - Posted by: Vivian Meyer (Friend) on: Nov 08, 2025
