It is with sadness we announce the passing of Concetta “Maria” Brambilla on November 8, 2025, at the age of 85 in Russell, Manitoba. Maria was a cherished mother, Nonna and Bisnonna. She is survived by her three children: Teresa (Calvin), Ermanno, Tony (Daniela), her grandchildren, Gina (Michael), Carla, Anna and Ben. Maria leaves to mourn her sisters, Antonietta and Rosa, her beloved great-granddaughters (Emma, Isabelle, Alexandria) and many nieces, nephews, cousins and loved ones. Maria was predeceased by her parents, Virginia and Francesco Merlino, and siblings, Pietro, Giuseppina and Providenza.
Maria was born in Termini Imerese, Sicily on March 5, 1940, she married Antonino Brambilla in April 1957. Maria and Antonino immigrated from Sicily to Winnipeg with their two-year-old daughter when Maria was 21 years old, in June 1961. Maria often shared the story of how they travelled to Canada, taking a 12-day boat ride from Sicily to Halifax, and then travelling by train from Halifax to Winnipeg. Maria loved telling stories about her growing up years in Sicily, her family and their traditions.
Maria worked as a health care aide in a nursing home for many years. She lived in St Boniface for a number of years before moving to their family home in Windsor Park. Maria moved into her own home in 1995 and was proud to remain independent in her home until her passing.
Maria took great pride in homemaking; she was talented in embroidery, sewing and cooking. You were never left hungry when visiting Maria! She always made sure bellies were full when hosting family and visitors. Maria was thoughtful, always remembering our favorite dishes and taking time to prepare these for her family. Maria happily hosted Sunday dinner at her home for many years.
Maria enjoyed gardening, taking care of her flowers and tomatoes. She was always excited to show the spoils of her labor. Maria was a beloved Nonna and Bisnonna; her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.
Funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Green Acres Funeral Home, Highway 1 East at Navin Road, Winnipeg.
