Passed away at the Wawanesa Health Centre on Monday, December 1, 2025, at the age of 87 years, William Jack Mooney, of Wawanesa, MB.
Born August 25, 1938, Jack was raised on the Mooney farm in Northfield community outside of Wawanesa. He spent much of his youth playing sports, helping on the farm and travelling with his brother, mother and father on the harness racing circuit. As kids, Jack and his brother Harry travelled by horse drawn cart to Northfield school, the cart was pulled by Marjorie Barsac, a daughter of racehorse Don Barr.
Jack had a passion for hockey. He played from a young age on a rink flooded by his Dad on the farm and made his way up through minor hockey in Wawanesa, Junior B and Senior hockey until he was 40 and then retired to beer league.
Jack met his wife Dell (Naismith) when he and his brother went on a trip to the West Coast to visit Jack Naismith (Dell’s father) who grew up in Northfield district and was good friends of Jack’s dad, Harry Mooney Sr. In 1964 Dell came to Wawanesa to care for her ailing Grandmother. The rest is history....
Jack and Dell were married in 1966 and had three children. They spent a lifetime farming a mixed farm (grain and livestock). Jack’s passion really was the livestock and the family spent many happy times herding and trailing cattle to and from pastures on horseback.
Jack was a community spirited person. He served as a representative on Keystone Agricultural Producers and 14 years as a Municipal Councilor for South Cypress. He was Chairman of Wawanesa Minor Hockey and spent many years coaching hockey. He also served on the Building Committee for the Wawanesa Arena and was Chairman of the Milford Cemetery Board for a number of years.
In latter years, Jack wanted to spend his time with family and his six wonderful grandchildren. He will be remembered as a wonderful, kind-hearted, fun-loving man who we will all miss very much.
Jack leaves to mourn his passing his loving wife Dell (nee Naismith), son Gordon (Eileen) Mooney of Wawanesa, daughters Nancy (Brian) Arundel of Winnipeg, MB and Erika (Kelly) Rudyk of Sherwood Park, AB; six grandchildren, Carson, Jordyn, Michael, Nathan, Elias and Seanna, brother Harry Mooney of Wawanesa, as well as numerous extended relatives and friends.
Jack was predeceased by his parents Harry G. and Lillian Mooney (nee Braybrook).
A Celebration of Jack’s life will be held in the Wawanesa Community Hall on Saturday, December 27, 2025 at 2:00 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend. A Private Family Graveside will be held in the Wawanesa Cemetery.
Friends that so wish, memorial donations can be made in Jack’s memory to the Wawanesa Personal Care Home, Box 309, Wawanesa, MB, R0K 2G0 or to a charity of choice.
