On December 10, 2025, Val Brown rejoined her beloved husband Ron (1932 to 2019) in the hereafter.
Val is survived by her brother Douglas (Nancy), children Brian (Kelly) and Donna, grandchildren Jason (Jacqueline) and Jillian (Ryan), great-grandchildren Rosalie, Elisabeth, Gabrielle, Michael, and Catherine, and step great-grandchildren Brooke and Autumn.
Val was born in Winnipeg on January 26, 1936. An athlete with a competitive spirit, she excelled at tennis and badminton as a youth and young adult. She continued to pursue both through much of her adult life at the Winnipeg Canoe Club and Royal Lake of the Woods Yacht Club. She was also a passionate paddler and swimmer, and taught swimming for many years. Later, she and Ron adopted cross-country skiing, scuba diving, square dancing, and hiking for recreation. Right to the end of her life, she was known for her daily walks, no matter the weather.
Val and Ron married in 1956 in Winnipeg where they lived while raising their children. In 1985 they moved to Kenora to be closer to the family cottage on Coney Island in Lake of the Woods. They settled first in Keewatin before moving to Southward Villa in Kenora in 1996. Val always considered the Coney Island cottage her home, where she spent every summer from 1946 to 2025.
While working as a Legal Secretary and after retirement, Val contributed greatly to the Kenora community. She volunteered with the Kenora Lions Club, Club Day Away, Cancer Society, and Toastmasters. With Toastmasters, she achieved several awards as a speaker, leader, and mentor. She reached an amazing 75 blood donations. Val participated enthusiastically in various activities at the New Horizons Seniors Centre and St. Alban’s Cathedral. She was an inspiration to everyone.
When she was diagnosed with cancer in 2025, her determination and toughness shone through. She made the most of her last summer at the cottage on Coney, continued to spend time with friends, and participated in community activities until the week before she passed.
Val and her family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at the Lake of the Woods District Hospital for their outstanding care and kindness.
A Memorial Service will be held at St Alban’s Cathedral, 312 Main Street South, Kenora at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday January 10, 2025. A reception will follow in the Cathedral Hall.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to New Horizons Seniors Centre, St. Alban’s Cathedral, or a charity of your choice.
