Maree Grigaitis passed away peacefully at 12:30 a.m. on Sunday, December 14, 2025, in Mexico, at the age of 73.
She was born in Sydney, Australia, to Alfred James Maloney and Kathleen Mary Maloney, both of whom predeceased her. In recent years, Maree discovered that she was adopted and devoted meaningful time to reconnecting with her birth brothers, Glenn and Ricki. This reconnection became an important part of her later life, and she was especially touched when Glenn visited her in Puerto Vallarta, allowing them to spend time together in person.
Maree lived a life defined by curiosity, independence, and travel. She made her home in many places throughout her life, most recently Winnipeg, Manitoba, before retiring to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, a place she had long dreamed of calling home. Her professional life was as varied as her travels, spanning roles from radio DJ in Kelowna to Assistant Consul and Trade Commissioner at the Canadian Consulate General, among many other paths in between.
She held Australian citizenship, Mexican residency, and had recently become a Canadian citizen, reflecting a life lived across borders and cultures. Maree had friends around the world and embraced travel not simply as movement, but as a way of belonging to many places at once.
She is survived by her beloved son, Jeremy Grigaitis, who was with her in her final days and ensured she was comfortable and cared for. She is also fondly remembered alongside her small dog, Lucy, who was a constant presence and companion.
No services will be held at this time. Maree's ashes will be shared in the ocean at Mismaloya Beach in Puerto Vallarta by her son at a later date, in a small gathering of friends, at one of her most cherished places.
Please hold a special place in your heart for Maree. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Teca Animal Refuge in Puerto Vallarta.
