On December 1, 2025, surrounded by family, Rick passed away from his yearlong battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease). He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
He was born on March 16, 1951, to Bill (William) and Mary Yunyk. Rick is survived by his wife of 37 years, Pat Lumsden, and their children, Brydon (Joyanne), Cristine, and David. Also left to mourn are his mother, Mary, brother Jim (Connie), brother-in-law Tom (Janis), sister-in-law Lori (Tim), mother-in-law Berna (Van) two nephews, six nieces and his precious grandchildren, Kaden and Zolie. He was pre-deceased by his father Bill and son Ryan.
Rick was proud of his North End Winnipeg roots and finished his education at Fort Richmond Collegiate following a family move. He enjoyed a 40-year career as a laboratory technician in the Department of Biology at the University of Manitoba. Rick had many interests and talents, including nature photography, cooking, sports, including curling and baseball, music, especially his piano and perhaps most of all, fishing. He was a skilled builder and repairman for so many projects at his home.
We would like to thank the many health care people and institutions who worked so hard to make his life as comfortable as possible, including the ALS Society of Manitoba, the Deer Lodge Centre Motor Neuron Disease Clinic, Palliative Care Manitoba, Community Therapy Services occupational and physical therapy, family doctor L. Lach, and many others.
A Celebration of Life for Rick will be held on January 10, 2026, at Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Drive at 2:00 p.m. If you would like to honour Rick's memory with a donation, we would be pleased to see it go to the ALS Society of Manitoba or the Deer Lodge Centre Foundation directed to the Motor Neuron Disease Clinic.
