PETER ALEXANDER YOUNG

1946 – 2026

Surrounded by those who loved him most, Peter Young passed away peacefully on Monday, February 2, 2026, at Riverview Health Centre after a 13-year battle with Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.

Peter was born June 8, 1946, in Fort William (now Thunder Bay), Ontario. He graduated from St. Patrick High School in 1964 and Lakehead University in 1969. On August 24, 1968, he married Keitha Marlene Smart, beginning a partnership that spanned 57 years.

Peter’s love of sport and storytelling began early. As a teenager he covered local fastball, then went on to work in radio and television in Thunder Bay before moving to Winnipeg. There, he joined CKY TV and later spent two decades with CTV, calling Winnipeg Jets games, CFL matchups and Grey Cups, and university championships. He hosted Wide World of Sports and a weekly CFL highlights show on ESPN, and had the privilege of covering the Olympic Games in Sarajevo (1984), Los Angeles (1984), and Calgary (1988). In 1983, he was named ACTRA Sportscaster of the Year.

In 1994, Peter became the play-by-play voice of the Winnipeg Goldeyes. He later ran a video production and sports consulting company, worked with organizations including the Toronto Blue Jays, and held sports management roles with teams in Florida, Alberta, and Arizona.

Peter was inducted into the Northwestern Ontario Sports Hall of Fame in September 2023, and named to the Manitoba Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association Media Roll of Honour in November 2025.

He was predeceased by his father Harold (1992); mother Zita (née Tapsay) (2008); and brother David (2021). He leaves behind his beloved wife, Marlene; sons, Jason (Jessica Mailloux), and Branden (Kathryn); grandsons Alexander and Everett, and their stepbrother Zachary.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to Dr. Catherine Moltzan and the staff of CancerCare Manitoba, Peter’s primary care physician Dr. Ian Maharaj, and the staff of Riverview Health Centre for their care and compassion over the years.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba in Peter’s name. Cremation has taken place. In keeping with Peter’s wishes, there will be no formal service. A Celebration of Life will be held this spring.

Condolences & Memories (9 entries)

  • As a former Winnipegger I was lucky enough to meet Peter when he moved into our neighbourhood in Calgary several years ago. He came into my shop and I was like oh my “ Now there is a familiar face I haven’t seen in a very long time” I introduced myself and we proceeded to chat about “ Our Winnipeg” etc. Each & every time he & Marlene popped in we enjoyed good conversations. When they moved back to Winnipeg I missed seeing them. I even made a special delivery from Calgary once on a road trip home for them! I am sending my most sincere condolences to Marlene & their family. Us Winnipeggers, no matter where we live will remember Peter were with great fondness.Rest easy Peter🙏 - Posted by: Barb Shapiro (Tuscany community member in Calgary) on: Feb 19, 2026

  • In the 5th or 6th grade Peter and I hang around together. He was the hockey player, I just the nerdy kid on the street over. We both attended St. Elizabeth’s school from grades 1 thru 8. He went to St. Pats while I went to FWCI because my family knew we were going to California soon, and we did in 1961. Our lives separated at that point. Peter was as I found out during our hang time, honest and generous and had the stuff to make his life successful. He did just that. I learned he was a sportscaster and manager of the Moose while searching for my cousins on the internet. I was happy he did well, because there were classmates who did not. From this obituary I leaned he was working in Arizona. The 6 degrees of separation went to 7 as I have business interests and relatives in Arizona. If I had known we could have easily met up. It would have been my pleasure after all the years. Peter was a great guy and his family should rejoice in his memory. May he rest in peace. - Posted by: Richard Todero (Elementary School Friend) on: Feb 16, 2026

  • Deepest sympathies to Marlene, Jason, Branden and the entire family from my wife Verna and I. The summer of 1994, sharing the Winnipeg Goldeyes broadcast booth was the best summer, quite likely, of my life! His smile, laugh, mischieviousness and...most of all.his professionalism will stay with me! - Posted by: Les Lazaruk (Friend and broadcast colleague) on: Feb 14, 2026

  • It’s hard to put into words what your friendship meant to me. You faced your battle with cancer with a strength and grace that inspired everyone around you. Even on the hardest days, your courage never wavered, and your spirit never dimmed. You were more than a friend—you were steady, kind, and genuine in a way that made people feel safe just being near you. Your laughter, your stories, your quiet wisdom… they will echo in our hearts far longer than time allows. Though your fight has ended, your impact never will. We carry you forward in the lessons you taught us about resilience, gratitude, and living fully, even when life feels unbearably heavy. Rest peacefully, Peter. You were deeply loved, and you will be deeply missed. - Posted by: Robert Young (Friend) on: Feb 14, 2026

  • Marlene, to you & your family, my sincere condolences. I worked with Marlene at Silver Heights Collegiate for many years. We became good friends, but over the years lost touch. Marlene, I last saw you at Safeway on Cavalier during covid. We shared news about our lives. I remember seeing Peter at a S.H. staff function and he was very pleasant to chat with. I, for one, can really say I understand what's it's like to lose your partner of many years. Marlene, please contact me on FB by private message. I look forward to renewing our friendship. In friendship, Claudette. - Posted by: Claudette Rainville (Friend of Marlene) on: Feb 14, 2026
