ROBERT ANTHONY UNTEREINER

It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Robert Anthony Untereiner, at the age of 68 years, on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

Born January 15, 1958, in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Rob was the oldest of three children of Ron and Margaret (nee Duerr) Untereiner. As a child, Ron moved with his family to Berens River, Manitoba and later to Brandon, where he completed his schooling. Rob was employed by Manitoba Telephone System in 1977 as a Field Service Technician. He worked first in Winnipeg and later settled in Churchill in 1981 where he spent the happiest years of his life.

Rob loved the North. He was an outdoorsman and relished the time he spent with friends boating, fishing, and hunting at his cabin at Twin Lakes and at the camp he helped to establish along the Churchill River. During his time in northern Manitoba, Rob served with the Canadian Rangers and participated in several search and rescue missions. He returned to Brandon in 2005 and retired from MTS in 2014.

He was predeceased by father, Ron (died 2019) and is survived by his mother, Margaret, his sisters, Wendy Untereiner (Gary McNeely) and Jamie Untereiner (Keith Chaytor), and his nephews Gabriel Gonzo, Jacob Gonzo and Donal McNeely who remember Rob for his warmth, generosity, and wonderful sense of humour.

Rob's family would like to express their gratitude to Dave McLenan, his former co-worker and long-time friend, for the care and support he provided during the last years of Rob's life.

Cremation has taken place. As per Rob's wishes, no service will be held.

When despair for the world grows in me

and I wake in the night at the least sound

in fear of what my life and my children's

lives may be, I go and lie down where the

wood drake rests in his beauty on the

water, and the great heron feeds.

I come into the peace of wild things

who do not tax their lives with

forethought of grief. I come into the

presence of still water.

And I feel above me the day-blind stars

waiting with their light. For a time

I rest in the grace of the world, and am free.

  • I am sorry to hear that Rob has passed away. Rob and I were on the CVFD in the early 80's. I always enjoyed spending time with Rob, he was a great guy and enjoyed all the opportunities that life in Churchill offered.
