Life well lived … and well loved
On January 14, 2026 peacefully at home with family, Eugenia took her last breath and departed on her final adventure to join Dad and arrive in her Heavenly home.
Mom was born February 8, 1932 in Winnipeg to Ukrainian immigrant parents Peter and Ahafia Gollard. She grew up in Ignace, Ontario attended Moulton College in Toronto, graduating Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg. Her multicultural childhood and experiences developed her lifelong characteristics of confidence, leadership and inquisitiveness. Mom carried the values of her upbringing throughout her life; hard work, humility, and faith. She possessed an ability to inspire and empower those around her, encouraging others to believe in themselves and rise to challenges with confidence and purpose.
Mom married the love of her life Peter Walter Ellie in 1950 and they lived an incredible example of partnership, love, adventure, goodness and grace for 70 years before Dad predeceased her in 2020. Their life together was blessed and full as they instilled their joint values into their four children who are grateful for the privilege of having them as parents.
Mom’s edict was always that “Dad made the bread and butter and she made the jam”. Mom’s various jobs led her into sales where she loved spending time with and serving people. She began her venture into Real Estate where she was a member of the Winnipeg Real Estate Board for over 40 years and received her degree as a fellow of the Real Estate Institute of Canada. She loved the responsibility of helping people find the perfect homes to raise their families in and enjoyed a career that took pride in word of mouth and repeat clients.
Mom and Dad traveled the world, built the family cottage at McConnell Lake and enjoyed Snowbird winters in Florida. Mom was the ultimate hostess and loved cooking and entertaining. She was a magician in quickly whipping up a batch of perogies for visitors and was known to all for ensuring the cookie jar was never empty.
Mom was a powerhouse of a woman with a warm smile and beautiful eyes. As the matriarch, she had the unique combination of being brave, bold, generous and warm hearted. She was an amazing cook, wonderful wife and mother, faithful friend, talented speaker and had a passion to get to know and serve all those that appeared on her path. In every role God gave her - daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, aunt, friend, - Mom acted with integrity, compassion and an unshakable belief in the power of love.
Retirement never suited Mom so after the nest emptied, Ellie's Bed and Breakfast began which allowed the world to come to their doorstep and provided new friends to nurture and love. Mom had a strong faith and enjoyed sharing her thoughts and beliefs with people of various faiths and backgrounds. She encouraged everyone to pray insisting that formalities weren’t necessary and that everyone could simply “talk to God” for thanksgiving, support, comfort or guidance. She received her diploma in Pastoral Care and was privileged to walk alongside families who needed support.
Being an only child, her family was her greatest joy. Her legacy includes; her children Desmond and Karen Ellie, Teresa and Andries Blouw, Nadine and Aaron Linquist, Elisia and Daniel Hammond; her grandchildren: Sage, Christina and MJ, Aaron and Sara, Vanessa and Wes, Whitney, Anastasia, Lauren and Mitch, Gareth and Julia; and her great grandchildren: Avery, Estelle, Edward, Nora and Ivy.
We wish to thank the team of angels that helped care for, entertain, pamper and serve Mom for the last 4 years: Lilian, Kadi, Juliet, Myrna, Ana, Irene and Joy. Your compassionate and sweet service was so appreciated.
Cremation has taken place and funeral service will be held Tuesday, April 14th 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Roman Catholic Church, 510 River Avenue, Winnipeg. Reception to follow at 77 Middle Gate.
