Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySALVATORE (SAM) SCALETTA
It is with heavy hearts we announce the peaceful passing of Sam Scaletta at Vista Park Lodge with his wife Carla and daughters Andrea and Jennifer by his side. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 58 years Carla (Reichert), his daughters Andrea (Will) Woytowich and Jennifer (Terry) Miles, and his beloved grandchildren Julia (Abhi), Evan (Alice), Abby, Hannah (Matt) and Mark. He will be greatly missed by his siblings Angela Porco, Giuseppe (Diane) Scaletta and Anna Scaletta (John Mooibroek), brothers and sisters-in-law Ken (Barb) Reichert, Alfredo Maida, Salvatora Scaletta and Giuseppa Scaletta, 11 nephews, nine nieces and their families. He was predeceased by siblings Giuseppa (Bill) Martin, Ignazio Scaletta, Vincenzo Scaletta, Maria Maida and brother-in-law Francesco Porco.
Sam was born in Termini Imerese, Sicily and immigrated to Winnipeg with his family in 1951. He grew up on Genthon Street in St Boniface attending Nelson McIntyre Collegiate and graduating from the University of Manitoba St Paul’s College with a Bachelor of Arts in 1966 and a Bachelor of Education in 1968.
Sam taught English at Windsor Park Collegiate from 1966 to 1996. His teaching fostered lifelong friendships with colleagues, and his mentorship positively influenced the lives of his students. Sam was honoured in 2014 by former students Mike and Lisa Saladin who established a scholarship and student centre in his name at the Medical University of South Carolina.
Sam was fortunate throughout his life to be surrounded by good friends. He remained close with childhood friends Carl, Vern and Dan, university friends Joe and Bill, as well as fellow teachers and former students Brian, John, Larry, Al, Mike, Reed and Yves (the Biltmore Boys).
Sam sang with the Winnipeg Philharmonic Choir, golfed (hole in one on the 9th hole at Windsor Park), played cribbage (29 hand twice) and loved the cottage at Deighton Beach. He enjoyed getting the deals on groceries, cutting the grass, dominating at ping pong, pouring a rum and coke and having a good snooze on the couch. He celebrated his 70th birthday with the return of the Winnipeg Jets and was a lifelong fan of the Bombers and the Jets. He was the 1997 champion of the Sam Scaletta Ashern Invitational Open and will forever be the Commissioner.
For 16 years, Sam lived at Vic Wyatt House enjoying the community and natural beauty along the Seine River.
Sam was a devoted husband and father and his greatest joy in life was becoming a grandfather. He adored his grandchildren and was immeasurably proud of the adults they have become. He was happiest when everyone was together under the same roof, including the beloved dachshunds.
We would like to thank all staff at Vista Park Lodge for caring for Sam with kindness and devotion after moving there in 2018 with advanced Parkinson’s. We are especially thankful for the love and support we received during Sam’s last few days.
If friends so desire, please consider a donation to Windsor Park Golf Course 100th Anniversary towards the planting of a new tree or a bench for the course (https://ppdportal.winnipeg.ca/Golf/Windsor/request.jsp) or to Save Our Seine towards the preservation of the natural beauty behind Vic Wyatt House (saveourseine.com).
Funeral mass will be held Tuesday, May 5, 2026, at 11:15 a.m. at Christ the King Church, 847 St Mary’s Road. Private interment at Brookside Cemetery will occur at a later date.

Mr. Scaletta taught me at WPC in the early 80's. I found him to be a educator that cared about his students and their thoughts. My condolences to his family. - Posted by: Lisa Tetrault Johnson (Former student) on: May 07, 2026

Sam was one of the “Genthon Gang” who grew up together and shared many fun moments. He was the best, most reliable carpool driver all the way thru university. We shared many laughs, tears, frustrations, and musical moments. Sam, A true friend whose friendship lasted a lifetime, will always be truly cherished. My thoughts and prayers are with you Carla and your family. I’m unable to be with you as I’m out of the country but I will be at Sam’s “celebration of life” in spirit. Met Sam & Carla when they purchased their cottage at Deighton Beach and enjoyed their company for many years. While our friendship was at Deighton Beach in the summer, we enjoyed the visits we had with them both. Sam was not one to give in easy when he faced Parkinson's, and with the support from Carla, we saw his enjoyment in golfing at Ashern and his determination in making sure the grass was well trimmed. Our condolences and thoughts are with Carla and their family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Douglas and Sharon King (Friend) on: May 05, 2026

Mr. Scaletta was a much-valued friend of my father’s, a champion of English literature, and a role model. As a teacher, he had a gift for encouraging students to broaden their knowledge. Near the end of Grade 12, he asked what I was reading, and before I could answer, he was already loading my arms with Crime and Punishment, Brave New World, and Of Human Bondage. And I read (almost) all of them, too. I also remember how he would share letters from former students during class. I was always impressed that so many people, now adults, still corresponded with him. It spoke volumes about the impact he had and the respect he earned. One memory that has stayed with me for decades happened at my parents’ 25th anniversary celebration. I was giving a speech and suddenly lost my place. As the moment stretched on, I caught his eye in the crowd. His reassuring “keep going” gesture was all I needed to find my place again. There was something steadying about his presence. He was a wonderful man. - Posted by: Ryan Penner ((former student & family friend)) on: May 04, 2026

Sam and Carla along with their young daughters lived for a number of years on Elm Park Road. Sam was friendly and engaging and always remembered my name and the neighbourhood connection. There I was, shy and yet engrossed in Mr. Scaletta's class. I wasn't a big reader but I loved poetry and the assignments we were given stimulated me enough to follow through as a Journalist and a writer. I was fortunate to see Sam and Carla several times in the past 10 years. One time, four of us went to Maximes. I gave Sam some writings, as I now belonged to a seniors writing group. I asked him to do his homework, to read them and mark outside his comments. Sure enough he did, in red pen, and sent them back. Since then I have had a continuing career in journalism and must give him credit for the engagement in his classroom. Not often do we find a mentor like Sam was for me. Or a kinder, most understanding teacher as he was. I am so happy to have shared , albeit some of the hardest years of his life with him and Carla. My heart is sad, but my memories fill up the spaces. To Carla and family, you were very lucky. Bless you all at this difficult time. - Posted by: Laurie Anne Marie Gyde (Sam's student at Windsor Park Collegiate) on: Apr 30, 2026
