Peacefully, and surrounded by family, Bill passed away at home on May 25, 2026 at the age of 89. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Oliver and Margaret, his sisters, Gwen and Dorothy, brothers-in-law, Wally, Allan, and Ken, sisters-in-law, Karen Smuttell and Karen Brown, and niece Heather.
He leaves to mourn his loving wife of over 64 years, Marian; their children, Sharon (Todd), Garth (Tracy), and Sandi (Don); grandchildren, Morgan (Ty), Kailey (Alex), Lexi (Nolen), Makyla (Luca), and Derek; and two great-grandchildren, Annie and Evvie. He is also survived by brother-in-law Gary, sisters-in-law, Donna and Sandra, honourary siblings, Dianne, Sam, Joanne, and John, and many nieces and nephews.
Bill grew up in the Elmwood area and graduated from Lord Selkirk High School. Following his schooling, Bill began his career at CNR as a carman. He later pursued a career in power engineering and eventually began his career in the hospital field. He started at the Winnipeg Rehab Hospital in 1961 and eventually became Senior Director of Property Services at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg, where he retired in 1992 after 31 years of dedicated service, leaving a lasting mark on his colleagues and in the hospital community.
Next to God and his family, Bill loved the Whiteshell where he camped as a youth and eventually enjoyed cottage life at Dorothy and Red Rock Lakes for over six decades. Bill loved working on the cabin, always making improvements. He enjoyed fishing, bird watching and walking through the forest with his beloved golden retrievers. He also cherished family and friends' visits at the cabin. In their 22 years of retirement, Bill and Marian wintered in Texas and made many new friendships over the years. In their mobile home park, they enjoyed happy hours, walks, the bicycle club, billiards, dancing, golfing, and Bill spent many hours in the woodshop making countless Dirty Marbles game boards that he gifted to family and many friends.
He was an Honourary lifetime member of Elmwood Curling Club, a past member of Acacia Grand Lodge, and a member of Eastview Community Church.
Bill will be remembered for his strong work ethic and generosity in helping others. He could fix or repair almost anything or any problem, but of course it had to be done in a very specific way – to the family known as the "Bill Evans" way. He will also be remembered for his unique and keen sense of humour. His legacy of service, love, and joy, whether through family, community, music, or nature, will be cherished by all who knew him.
The family would like to give special thanks to Ms. Laura Klammer and Dr. Clark from the Palliative Home Care program for their care and support.
A Celebration of Life will take place at Eastview Community Church, 315 Maxwell King Drive in Winnipeg on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, if so desired, donations can be made to Bill's favorite charity - Operation Smile.
