Gregory Victor Loewen was born on January 31, 1966, at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, BC and left this world on May 2, 2026, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
He was the beloved son of Margaret June Carr-Lawton and Victor Abraham Loewen. He was predeceased by his parents and leaves to remember him: his wife Jennifer (Heller) Loewen of Winnipeg, sister Lenore Loewen Underhill and brother-in-law Arthur Underhill of Shawnigan Lake, BC; as well as many cousins and friends in Winnipeg and across Canada and the US.
As a young boy Greg demonstrated an aptitude and a love of learning. He read encyclopedically on a wide variety of subjects and had a remarkable memory for even the most esoteric facts. He embraced a passion for croquet, stamp collecting and all types of board games.
Part of his childhood was spent in the Alberni Valley and many trips to the West Coast of Vancouver Island reinforced his love of the sea and his particular fondness for the beaches of the Pacific Rim.
Greg also excelled at musical endeavours, learning classical guitar and playing clarinet in the Mt. Douglas High School Band. He continued to hone his guitar skills all his life and practiced daily on a specially designed classical electric guitar.
He graduated from the University of Victoria in 1988 with a BA in Anthropology, First Class Honours, and MA in Anthropology, First Class Honours in 1990. He received his PHD. in Anthropology and Sociology (1997) from the University of British Columbia.
Greg taught at Thompson Rivers University, Delta State University, Northwest Missouri State University, and at the University of Saskatchewan (St. Thomas More College). During that time, he was recognized with three teaching excellence awards and was a leading researcher in ethics, AI dialogue, voicing, education, health, and social theory. He had a full and rewarding academic career before retiring in 2016 to focus on his writing. Greg was an accomplished writer using many genres, both fiction and non-fiction and published over sixty books.
A creative visionary, Greg used his expertise to create community service programs, consult with correctional and rehabilitation programs, act as an educational and ethics consult and offer writing workshops. For the past five years, he was the Creative Director of Vigilance Digital Media, a video game software developer that has a mission to promote a healthy environment in its products. In 2025, Greg co-founded Insightful Ethics Communication and worked in the capacity of Chief Research Officer to develop digital health and wellness content.
Greg's greatest talent was his ability to help others reach their full potential. He did this by convincing others that they were smarter, more creative, and more talented than they actually were. And then over time, if they kept trying, they really were.
Greg enjoyed meaningful discussions with people in many walks of life. He loved the Montreal Canadians, cars, riding his bike, playing his guitar, listening to music, being in nature, and eating sushi. He loved his family deeply and will be greatly missed.
A Celebration of Life will take place on Sunday, June 21, 2026, Qualico Family Centre - the Tamarack Room, 330 Assiniboine Park Drive, Winnipeg, from 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
A virtual link will be provided for those who cannot attend. Memorials can be made to a trust being set up in Greg's name that will support Canadian writers.
