COMPTON JR. James

(Anamake)

March 28, 1988 - June 5, 2026

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of our son, brother, nephew, uncle and dad.

James passed away at the age of 38. He was the second youngest in our family of five, and from the moment he could walk, he was full of energy. He inherited his love of hockey from his dad, Jim. When he was little, they spent most evenings outside with neighbourhood kids, playing street hockey. He waited for dad to come home from work, and after supper they set up hockey nets to play until sundown. By the age of eight, James became a strong, dependable player and his team's leading scorer.

He tried out for Triple A alongside Jonathan Toews and was told he was among the final cuts. In Double A, he was a force of nature, excelled on defence and later became his high school team's leading scorer. He attended Maples Collegiate where he met the love of his life, Ashley.

At 17, he was recruited to play for the Raiders in the Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League (MMJHL), a Junior B league that allowed young players to continue competing while pursuing school or beginning their careers. During his two years there, one coach said James was among the top three players he ever saw in the league.

The last assist James gave, came on a pass to his father. He was known for his hard, accurate shot, but even more for the love he had for his dad.

He was a pipe carrier and four-time sun dancer.

James leaves to cherish his memory, his parents, Jim and Dolores, daughter Maria-Keaira, siblings Billy (McKay), Francine, Amber, Angel, Kathryn, nephews Gregory, Aiden, Benjamin, Addikys, nieces Avery, Aries, Artimys, godparents Audrey Malcolm and Stanley Starr, aunties Irene Jackson, Audrey Malcolm, Gloria Beaulieau, Mary Roulette, and Lisa Roulette, uncles Mervin Starr, Cecil Starr, Stanley Starr, Russell Starr, and Francois Arsenault.

He was predeceased by his grandparents Howard and Doris Starr, and James and Alice Compton, aunties Joan Malcolm, Cathy Compton, and Doreen Compton, uncles Gordon Wasteste and Freddy Starr.

A celebration of life will be held June 23, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue.
