JANICE MARLENE WARD

With heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived, we announce the peaceful passing of Janice Marlene Ward at the Assiniboine Centre in Brandon, Manitoba, at the age of 89.

Born on July 5, 1936, in the R.M. of Clanwilliam, Manitoba, to Gilbert and Agnes (Thompson) Gusdal, Janice grew up with a love of learning and service. After graduating from St. Michael's Academy in 1954 and completing her teacher training at Brandon University, she began her career teaching kindergarten at the Rivers Air Base.

On February 16, 1957, Janice married the love of her life, Benjamin J.T. Ward. Together they shared 69 years of marriage, raising six children and building a family that grew to include 15 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Over the years they made homes in Carberry, Erickson, Rivers, Wawanesa, Brandon, and their beloved Ditch Lake, where many treasured summer memories were made.

Janice wore many hats throughout her life - wife, mother, grandmother, teacher, volunteer, and friend - but she excelled most at bringing people together. Whether hosting a dinner party, preparing the best appetizers at happy hour, or knitting afghans for family and community events, she made everyone feel welcome. She and Ben travelled extensively through their involvement with Lions Clubs International, forming friendships around the world.

A dedicated community volunteer, Janice was especially proud of her work helping the Lionesses integrate into the Lions Club and fostering greater understanding and inclusion between the special-needs community and local schools. She believed that everyone deserved a seat at the table - and she usually made sure there was something delicious to eat once they got there.

Janice is lovingly remembered by her husband Ben; her children Tim (Kim) Ward, Terri-Lyn Ward, Tracy (Terry) Hein, Thomas Ward, Trent (Cindy) Ward, and Trisha (Stephen) Kelly; her 15 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and extended family and dear friends. She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Glenn Gusdal.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 27, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Carberry Plains Cemetery, followed by a reception from 1:00-3:00 p.m. at the Lions Manor in Brandon.

Her legacy lives on in the stories we share, the traditions we keep, and every gathering where food, laughter, and love bring people together.
