DENNIS PHILP

Norman Dennis Philp, 84, of Souris, Manitoba, passed away peacefully on June 18, 2026, family at his side.

Denny was born on July 6, 1941, in Souris. He grew up in the Beresford area and attended Beresford School till grade 8 and attended high school in Souris until grade 11. After leaving school he held several jobs and farmed with his dad.

He met and married Shirley Hawkins in 1967. They purchased a farm in the Beresford district. Here they had many small animals as well as cattle. They enjoyed doing handicrafts, gardening and Denny loved his roses. He helped with a craft club for kids at Beresford, encouraged and participated in his sons’ years in Boy Scouts and was a leader in the Souris Cubs. He enjoyed participating in local events, parades and beard growing contests.

After deciding to work off the farm and rent out his land he worked at a few jobs then the Souris Cheese Factory for 18 years; all the while keeping his cattle and small animals. Shirley passed away in 1994.

In 1997 he married Betty Groves. They bought an acreage at the edge of Souris. Here he continued his love for animals with miniature donkeys, miniature Irish Dexter cattle, and two horses.

He was active in the Ag Society, especially the baby animal petting zoo at the Souris Summer fair. Denny was a member of the Souris Lion’s Club until it folded. From its beginning Denny was involved with the Souris Railroad Museum and was responsible for the acquisition and restoration of the jigger in front of the museum.

After the Cheese plant closed, he did a few jobs then retired to remodel the house. He was happiest when fixing something or making something useful out of something broken.

He was a source of knowledge about local events and people and loved to pass on this information. He was a kind man who liked to help others. He loved his farm, his animals, his friends, and most of all his family.

Denny was predeceased by his parents, Bud and Hazel Philp, wife Shirley; and stepsons Stephen and Andrew Groves.

He leaves to cherish his memory wife Betty, children Twyla (Jodi) Anderson, Jason (Leonie), Tim (Robin); stepchildren Susan Groves (John), Erin Enns (Ken), 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Also, sisters Frances Radcliffe, Sharon White and their families.

The funeral was held on June 25th at St Paul’s United Church, Souris.

In memory of Denny donation may be made to the Souris Glenwood Foundation, Box 518, Souris, MB. or any charity of choice.

Thank you to the many friends and family who attended Denny’s funeral, sent cards, messages, food, and flowers. A very special thank you to the wonderful Personal Care Home staff for their care and concern for the last four years and to the hospital nurses and Dr. Sopel for their care in those last few moments.
