It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John Kowal at the age of 102 years old.
He was predeceased by his brothers, Joe and Peter and sister Alice. Left to cherish his memory are daughters, Lynn and Monica (Curtis), grandchildren, Kevin (Riley), Kyle, Allie (Lorenzo), Eric and great-grandson Grayson.
John lived for 71 years in his beloved house on Montgomery Avenue until the age of 101. Working in his garden was one of his most enjoyable hobbies.
He was a fixture at sports games for his grandchildren and will be remembered for his trademark cowbell after a goal was scored.
John also enjoyed a good meal, whether it was a prime rib dinner, a night out at the buffet, or a Whopper at his favourite Burger King.
He was disappointed he had to wait until the grandkids were 18 to take them to the buffet at the McPhillips Station or Club Regent Casino.
One of John’s signature staples was his sense of humour and he would always have a joke or two up his sleeve, bringing smiles to those around him.
The jokes were flying at his surprise 100th birthday party at Breezy Bend Golf and Country Club which brought family, friends and neighbours together to celebrate this incredible milestone.
Visits with Grayson were a highlight for him in his final years as John would be talking about his great-grandson for the rest of the day.
The family would like to thank Vista Park Lodge for their care over the last year.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, July 28, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue. Reception to follow.
