Peacefully at Actionmarguerite St. Boniface, Winnipeg, Phyllis Kathleen Young (Williams) passed away on August 6, 2026, at 102 years of age.
Mrs. Phyllis Kathleen Young was born in Port of Spain, Trinidad on March 30,1924 and it was recorded on her birth certificate as April 2. She had two dates to celebrate her birthday. After her secondary education, she enrolled in nursing at Port of Spain General Hospital where she trained as a Registered Nurse in midwifery and ophthalmology obtaining a nursing certificate in both fields. Phyllis worked for a few years then migrated to the United Kingdom in 1954.
In the United Kingdom, Phyllis joined the National Health Services as a nurse working in Midwifery and Ophthalmology. She worked at the prestigious Moorfields Eye Hospital during her time there. Her training in Trinidad allowed her to be employed in those disciplines. After working in the United Kingdom for a few years, Phyllis was recruited by the Government of Manitoba to join the nursing staff at the Winnipeg General Hospital. She left the United Kingdom and arrived in Winnipeg in 1957. The same year she married Hubert Young who later graduated as a medical doctor.
In Winnipeg, Phyllis joined the staff at the Winnipeg General Hospital in the Midwifery. Over the years, she rose to Head Nurse. She later moved to the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg spending most of her experience there working in the ophthalmology department where she ended her active nursing career.
Phyllis and her husband Dr. Hubert Young returned to Trinidad where they opened a Seniors home in St James. After operating the Home for many years, they returned to Winnipeg to live. Phyllis was quite involved in the Caribbean community and can be considered as a pioneer in the community. When she arrived in Winnipeg, the number of people from the Caribbean could have been counted "on one hand". She acted as a mentor to those from the Caribbean who followed and helped them to settle in and adjust to life in Winnipeg. She built lasting friendships with many people she met in the early years of her arrival to Winnipeg. As Phyllis became less independent, she relied on her niece Delnora Rice to oversee her care.
She was predeceased by her mother Beryl Dyett (Tan Birdie), her husband Dr. Hubert Young and her close cousin Joan Alexander. She is survived by her brother William (Elsie) Greaves, nieces, Adonna Greaves and Phyllis Hinds, nephews, David Greaves and Danny Greaves and their families.
She will be missed and lovingly remembered by the extended Dyett and Young families in Canada and Trinidad and Tobago and United States.
The Funeral will be Monday, August 24, 2026, 10:00 a.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home.
