Vonda was born to Art and Maim Cochrane of Elgin in 1942. She fell victim to the Polio epidemic at age 11 just before the vaccine was available. Polio made life extremely difficult for Vonda, and aging made it even worse. She never complained and often said “it is what it is”.
Vonda went to school in Elgin and Moore Park, where she met Gary. She then graduated from Justice and went on to Teacher’s College in Brandon. Gary and Vonda were married on July 11, 1964, in Boissevain.
Throughout her teaching career Vonda taught in Margaret, Brandon, and Moore Park until the school closed due to consolidation. She then parked her career and Gary and Vonda had two daughters Kelly and Jodi. Teaching was her passion and after the girls moved out, she started tutoring high school math in their home. Every one of her students meant the world to her.
Vonda and Gary lived and farmed in the Moore Park district until they moved to Winnipeg in 2019 to be closer to their family - daughter Kelly, husband Russell Burton and grandchildren Sophie and Jack Burton; daughter Jodi, husband Bruce Bowie; and sister Marleen Church. Vonda was also very close to her aunt Donalda Neufeld of Brandon.
The family would like to thank the staff at Concordia Hospital for the care they provided Vonda and the staff and residents at Kildonan House, which was her happy place.
