MIKE BOWNESS Peacefully, with his wife Jess beside him, Dr. John (Mike) Michael Bowness died of cancer in hospital on October 7, 1999. Born in 1928 in New Mills, Derbyshire, UK, Mike was schooled in Manchester and educated in Liverpool. His teaching and research career in biochemistry took him to the University of Malaya (Singapore) from 1952 to 1957, the University of Pittsburgh from 1957 to 1959, the University of Singapore from 1959 to 1965, and the University of Manitoba from 1965 until he retired in 1995. He became full Professor in 1971 and was awarded Professor Emeritus in 1998. As well as his wife Jess, Mike is survived by his children, Alun, David, Susan and Gordon and their spouses, Donnie, Rita, Denis and Laurie; his grandchildren, Evan, Grace, Damian, Camille, Chantelle,. Miguel and Melanie; his sister Enid and her husband Henry Huggill; his nephew Dr. Phillip Hanam and family; his fury companion Sir Dylan; and many relatives, friends and colleagues in Canada, the UK, Singapore and elsewhere. In addition to his family and professional life, Mike loved the outdoors, reading and music, especially opera. The family would like to extend their thanks to the staff of the GD2 ward at the Health Sciences Centre. Cremation has taken place. A short service will be held at Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook Street, 774-7474 on Thursday, October 14, at 2:00 p.m. If desired, donations can be sent to Hospice and Palliative Care Manitoba, 2109 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3J 0L3.
