MARY BRAUN Mary Braun of Winnipeg, passed away peacefully on November 26, 1999 at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg at the age of 78 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born October 10, 1921 in the Grunthal area to Jacob J. F. and Katharina A. (Falk) Braun. Mary was predeceased by her parents; her step-mother, five brothers and two sisters. She is survived by three sisters-in-law, Nellie Braun of Steinbach, Anne Braun of Winnipeg and Mintie Braun of Steinbach; 20 nieces and nephews and their families; a very special cousin Cornie Braun of Winnipeg; numerous other cousins and a large circle of friends. As a very young child Mary moved with her parents to Paraguay where her mother passed away shortly after the move. Several years later the family returned to Canada. Her father remarried and life continued with the new mother with whom she shared a very close relationship. Aunt Mary began working in Winnipeg in housekeeping, until the illness of her father called her back to Grunthal, where she cared for him until his death. Later she moved to Winnipeg and took the occupation of a seamstress, a work she enjoyed until retirement. Two distinct passions Aunt Mary demonstrated were the important role played in the lives and activities of all her family and the greater family reunions in 1993 and 1996. In conjunction of celebrating family she gave her energies to helping with geneology books written in 1995 and 1999. Retirement also allowed Aunt Mary to do some extensive travelling in Europe, which were experiences she loved to share. She was an avid reader and was always looking to learn something new. She expressed often that life is a continuing learning experience and we never want to stop learning. Mary Braun was a life-long member of the Elim Mennonite Church in Grunthal and deeply rooted in her faith. Special thanks to the staff at Riverview Health Centre in Winnipeg who so lovingly cared for her in the last few weeks of her life. Viewing will be held at Kerrs Funeral Chapel, 120 Adelaide St. in Winnipeg, from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 28. Funeral services will be held on Monday, 1:00 p.m. at the Elim Mennonite Church, Main Street E., in Grunthal, with burial at the Grunthal Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Riverview Health Centre, c/o Brenda Slobozian, 3 EAST, 1 Morley St., Winnipeg, MB R3L 2P4. Arrangements entrusted to Loewen Funeral Chapel, Steinbach, 326-1351.
