WOLODYMYR (WALTER) BODNARCHUKIt is with deep sorrow, the family would like to announce the peaceful passing of Walter Bodnarchuk on Tuesday, December 21, 1999.Walter was born to Michael and Maryna Bodnarchuk on March 10, 1919 in selo Shvajkivtsi, Chortkiv region, Western Ukraine.While in Germany, during the Second World War he met his wife and lifetime partner, Nina (Zuk). They were married on May 17, 1947 and arrived in Canada on November 30, 1949. Soon after that he was employed by the City of Winnipeg, Engineering Department and after 35 years of employment he retired at the age of 65.Dido as he was often called, will be remembered by his caring and generous nature, playful spirit and wit. He was a strong-willed man that lived life to the fullest, enjoying all aspects of nature, especially fishing and gardening.His grandchildren were his pride and joy, always looking forward to family gatherings. Walter enjoyed all of the four seasons, Christmas being his favourite time of the year and by his twinkling lights he wished each of you the most joyous of Christmases.He was a member of Sts. Vladimir and Olga Cathedral, the Canadian Ukrainian Institute Prosvita and was involved with the IPAC.Walter leaves to mourn his wife of 52 years, Nina and his three daughters, Lesia (Nelson) Szwaluk, Orysia Bodnarchuk (Jamie Reilly) and Petrusia (George) Pankewycz. Dido will be sadly missed by his six grandchildren, Oksana (Bryan Hopman) Volodymyr, Chrysant, Taisa, Talia and Maxim; family in Canada and many relative in Ukraine. Walter was predeceased by his parents Michael and Maryna; brother Joseph and other relatives.Panakhyda will be sung 7:00 p.m. Sunday, December 26 at Sts. Vladimir and Olga Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral, 115 McGregor St. Divine Liturgy will be celebrated 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 27 also at the Cathedral with Rev. M. Kouts officiating. Interment to follow in All Saints Cemetery.Honorary pallbearers will be his six grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Paul Dwolinsky, Peter Sochasky, Bill Kondrat, Ernest Kondrat, Jerry Kaminsky and Zorian Hudyma.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Pomich Ukrainy, c/o 777 Pritchard Ave. or Ukrainian Congress, 456 Main St.His family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the staff of ICU, Seven Oaks Hospital and MICU, Health Sciences Center as well as to the doctors who looked after him. Special thanks to Dr. T. Babick and Dr. J.
