Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryFREDERICK THOMAS CHIC JUNE 8, 1939 - OCTOBER 6, 2000 It is with great sadness we announce the sudden and untimely passing of Fred, on Friday, October 6, 2000, near Strathmore, Alta. Fred will always be loved by his wife of 35 years Roberta; his precious girls, Cathy (Doug), Susan, Marnie and Jennifer and his grandchildren, Steven, Katie, Kristie-Ann and Kyle who affectionately called him Poppa. Fred also leaves to mourn his brothers, Stanley and Ernie; his sisters, Mary, Rose, Leona and Olga; Robertas brother Ron and her sisters and their families. He leaves behind a wealth of friends, both young and old, who will miss so much of what Fred was, namely his sense of humour and the ease in which he could strike up a friendship. Fred was predeceased by his parents, Annie and Fred; his brothers, Charlie, Joe and Frank; his sisters, Helen and Nellie and his dear son (in-law) Chuck. Fred was born the youngest of 12 children on the family homestead in Melnice, Man. His adventures growing up on the farm provided us with many interesting and amusing stories. The work ethic learned there provided the basis for the years to come, having a rich, rewarding and varied career. He worked a variety of jobs in the Winnipeg Beach area and travelled to Calgary to work before he came to Selkirk to work at Mcleods with his friend Orest. He continued in the hardware business at Kmart, where he eventually became the Assistant Manager. Never afraid of a new challenge, he went into business for himself. He owned and operated Re-Nu Cleaners, before selling it to his daughter and son-in-law. Then he purchased the Snak Shak Dairy Bar, which quickly become known as Freddies Snak Shak. Everyone anticipated the opening of the Snak Shak; it was a true sign of springs arrival and a chance to visit. Never one to be idle, and to keep in contact with his many friends, his winter project was selling Christmas trees. In his younger days, he was an avid hunter and fishermen, winning a Master Angler Award. He loved baseball and played for many teams, most noted was the Selkirk Scrappers. In his later years he took up golf, becoming a member of the Selkirk Golf and Country Club. He cherished his place on the "Dream Team". This past spring Fred sold the Snak Shak and soon he and Berta were off exploring Manitoba and all its treasures; his favourite place was Oak Hammock Marsh. Fred was well known in the Selkirk Community. He was a Charter Member of the Selkirk Lions Club in 1979. He accepted the challenge of Club President in its second year 1980-81 and with his leadership during his term he helped bring the Club forward to the proud Community Service Club that it is today. Fred also served on the Boards of The Marine Museum of Manitoba (Selkirk) and the Selkirk and District Community Library. Family was of utmost importance to Fred. He loved our family holidays, from the old days at Blue Lake and Canyon Lake, to our present day family getaways which at one time revolved around fishing and then golfing. We were most fortunate to have spent a beautiful family vacation together in Mexico in February, 2000. His passing has left a deep void in the lives of all who knew and loved him. We hold him close in our hearts. Afterglow Id like the memory of me to be a happy one, Id like to leave an after glow of smiles when life is done. Id like to leave an echo whispering softly down the ways, Of happy times and laughing times and bright sunny days. Id like the tears of those who grieve to dry before the sun, Of happy memories that I leave when my life here is done. An evening prayer service will be held at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Selkirk, on Tuesday, October 10 at 7:00 p.m. with cremation to follow. A memorial service celebrating Freds life will take place again at the Church on Wednesday, October 11 at 2:00 p.m. Interment of his ashes will follow immediately after the service at The Lutheran Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. If so desired, donations can be made to the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Building Fund, The Heart and Stroke Foundation, 301-352 Donald St. Wpg R3B 2H8 or Cancer Care Manitoba, 675 McDermot St., Wpg R3E 0V9. Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
