He is predeceased by his mother, father and sister, John in 1951, Dora in 1964, sister Alice in 1997, and many lifelong friends. Mike was born 83 years ago in Selkirk, Man. on November 10, 1917 of parents who immigrated from the Ukraine at the turn of the century to begin new lives in Canada. His father started Boykos Fuel during the Great Depression. Mike took over the family business after the Second World War, building it up as he cared for his family, becoming well-known to many generations of Selkirk residents. Mike was a tireless worker who made sure his customers families had enough fuel to get them through the cold winters, sometimes even if they could not afford it. Mike liked boating and spending time with his family on summer Sundays at the beaches and Assiniboine Park. He also had a life-long interest in hockey, playing as a goalie in his teenage years and later being the goalie for the Selkirk businessmens league. At the end of his hockey career, he had a spurt of energy for one last game as a goalie with the old timers against the local police force. The family extends their sincere appreciation to Dr. R. Lindenschmidt and the outstanding nursing staff at Selkirk and District General Hospital for the excellent care and family support they provided to Mike and family as he coped with a debilitating stroke.
