JAMES STERLING CALDWELL JUNE 3, 1919 - OCTOBER 7, 2002 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, James Sterling Caldwell, aged 83, on October 7, 2002, at his residence in Winnipeg. Dad was predeceased by our beloved mother Shirley, December 21, 2001; his parents James and Mary; brothers, Kenneth and Wilton; sister Esther Johnson. He leaves to mourn his passing his children, David (Dorothy), Winnipeg, Thomas, Chula Vista, CA, Mary Beth Erickson (Brian), Thompson. He will also be sadly missed by his precious grandchildren, who affectionately nicknamed him "Pops", Shawn (Donna), and Jamie (Jamie-Lee) Martin; Victoria, Genevieve, and Allison Caldwell; and great-grandson Hunter Martin, all of Winnipeg. He is also survived by his sisters, Dorothy Young, Waskada, and Marion Martin (Manse), Virden, and many nephews and nieces of whom he was very fond. Dad was a proud veteran, having served his country as a Flying Officer and Radar Technician Instructor with the Royal Canadian Air Force during the Second World War. Over the years he enjoyed his membership with the Royal Canadian Legion No. 1, and was an active member of the Legion Bowling Team, serving as Treasurer. After the War, Dad enjoyed a career as a teacher with the Winnipeg School Division No.1 until 1955, at which time he joined the staff at the Child Guidance Clinic as a School Psychologist. He served in this capacity until his retirement in 1984, when he was working at schools in River East School Division. Dad spoke many times of how much he enjoyed his career, both in the classroom and with the Clinic. He was a gifted teacher and clinician, who had a wonderful rapport with children of all ages. Dad was always happiest spending time outdoors. He enjoyed walking, and loved to garden both at home and at the lake at Tall Timber Lodge. He was an avid fisherman. He spent happy times on many Manitoba lakes, including many in Northern Manitoba. His last fishing trip was to Paint Lake in the Thompson area last June. During summers when his family was growing up, Dad ensured they spent many happy hours swimming, fishing, skiing, and hiking at Toniata Beach in the Whiteshell. Dad passed on to all his children a love and appreciation of the beauty of nature and wildlife. He was also a passionate reader and seeker of knowledge, able to converse on a wide variety of topics. Dad had a particular fondness for the poetry of Robert Burns and enjoyed quoting his favorite poems. In accordance with Dad's wishes, cremation has taken place. A memorial service was held on Thursday, October 17, 2:00 pm, North Kildonan United Church, 174 Pentland St., Winnipeg, with Rev. Marc Whitehead officiating. In lieu of flowers, if desired, donations may be made in Dad's memory to the Canadian Diabetes Association, 102 - 310 Broadway, Winnipeg, MB, R3C 0S6.
