Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELMUT GOOSSEN December 23, 1942 - December 2, 2002 Helmut passed away quietly at the Grace Hospital. His wife was at his side. During the last few days of his life he was surrounded by his family and close friends. He was predeceased by his father Henry. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth, son Mark, mother Agathe, and sister Laura (Terry). Helmut was born in Neuenburg, Russia and spent his early years in Russia and Europe. He came to Winnipeg in 1949. His early school years were spent at Laura Secord. He had fond memories of his school years there. His musical interest and ability were already evident. He played the violin in the school orchestra. He also began playing the accordian, winning competitions at the German Club. His final school years at Daniel MacIntyre. Here he was a member of the well respected Daniel MacIntyre Choir. His working life began at Dominion Bridge. Once working, he had the money to pursue another love, flying. He would still relate with great excitement his first solo flight. After a few years, Helmut was ready for a greater challenge. He began training as an air traffic controller. It was in this field that he spent the rest of his working life, moving into computer support and then management. During the early years of their marriage, Elizabeth introduced Helmut to country dancing. He was an active member of The Village Green Morris Men, The Village Green English Country Dancers and the Royal Scottish Country Dancers. Always wanting to contribute to the organizations to which he belonged, it wasnt long before he was volunteering at The Mug Pub Pavilion. He was eventually both the Mayor and the Coordinator of the Pavilion. This involvement then lead to his working on the Folk Arts Council as Chairman of Folklorama. After Mark was born his strong sense of community involvement showed itself as he volunteered at River Heights Community Club and Winnipeg South District Soccer. We will remember you with love and miss you very much. May you rest in peace and may God bless you. Thank you to the staff at the Grace Hospital for the tender and loving care they gave Helmut in the last few days of his life. Prayers will be held at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd. (south of the Royal Canadian Mint) Friday, December 6 at 7:30 p.m. A celebration of Helmuts life will be held on December 7 at 1:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home.
