On January 20, 2003 at 70 years of age Sister Marie Bonin returned to the Father peacefully at Youville Place, Lexington, MA, U.S.A. The funeral mass will be celebrated at the same place on January 28. She leaves to mourn her passing three sisters, Albina, Orise and Dolores; and a brother Robert in the U.S.A. as well as a brother Paul who resides in Manitoba. Born in Laurier, MB on November 15, 1932, Marie entered the Grey Nuns novitiate in St. Boniface on August 5, 1950. In the footsteps of St. Marguerite dYouville Sister Marie Bonin consecrated herself to the service of the poor on February 15, 1953. A nurse by profession Sister Marie received her nursing diploma from the Regina Grey Nuns School of Nursing. She continued to perfect her education, obtaining a Masters Degree in Nursing and a Doctorate in Education. Much of her ministry was exercised in Nursing Education in St. Boniface General Hospital as director of the School of Nursing (1960 to 1963), and established the baccalaureate degree in nursing at the University of Montreal (1965 to 1972). From 1978 to 1980 she became director of Pastoral Care at St. Boniface General Hospital. Sister Marie Bonin also served as local superior and provincial superior of St. Boniface from 1980 to 1986. Elected assistant general of the Grey Nuns congregation in 1986, she constantly promoted the charism and the mission of Saint Marguerite dYouville. Inspired by a deep faith, Sister Marie was a highly gifted person, a woman of vision and numerous talents who served with competence and great ardour. As she completed her service in St. Boniface she received many recognitions for her multiple accomplishments. Her companions noted that she served in total abandonment to the Father and was blessed with much fruit. These later years she missioned in the U.S.A. A celebration of life to remember Sister Marie Bonin will be held on Tuesday, January 28 at 2:00 p.m. at the Grey Nuns Provincial House, 151 Despins St., St. Boniface.
