D. BRETT SOBERING On Friday, April 1, 2005, Brett Sobering, aged 29 years, set out in his boat on the Kootenay Lake. His overturned boat was recovered, however, Brett has not yet been found. He is listed as missing and presumed drowned. Trying to cope are his Dad and Mom, Doug and Marlene and his brother Steven and his wife Melanie, all of Beausejour; his Oma Helen Derksen of Steinbach; as well as many aunties, uncles, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his grandparents, Albert and Bernice Sobering; his Opa Eugene Derksen; and his Uncle Randy Sobering. Brett was born on February 20, 1976, in Winnipeg and attended Darwin School in St. Vital. He then went to Beausejour Elementary School and graduated from Edward Schreyer School. After graduation, he travelled in his VW van and toured Canada and the United States following the band PHISH. He experienced many adventures and after coming back to Beausejour for a short time, was lured to the Kootenay Mountains. He fell in love with the lake and mountains and made Gray Creek his home. Never one to follow a traditional lifestyle, he, by himself, and with a little help from his brother Steven and his Dad, built a straw bale house. Diagnosed with schizophrenia, life was not always easy for Brett, but he was still able to live independently and be part of his community. A wake in Brett's honour was held at the Gray Creek Hall in the Kootenay Mountains on Saturday, April 16. A memorial service will be held at the Sobering Funeral Chapel, Park Ave. E., Beausejour, on Friday, May 13 at 7:00 p.m. with Rev. Hugh Laidlaw officiating. If friends so wish, donations may be made to the Manitoba Schizophrenia Society, 3 - 1000 Notre Dame Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 9Z9. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I have a hard time believing Brett is gone. Still. He and I were good friends and I think of him often in disbelief. I knew him a little for a few years before we both ended up in horticulture school, and there we always were together - sharing rides to & from school (we were neighbours), every school field trip we sat together for the bus rides, bunked together, ate our lunches together and partnered up for everything anytime we had to choose someone for a class project.... as well as skipping the odd day of school, hahaha.. you rarely saw one without the other... we had each other's back. we had a lot of laughs and a lot of good times. I wish I had known that things were feeling rough for him, but I left the Kootenays after school was finished and came back to the west coast. He was the brother I never had. My heart still hurts that he is gone like it was yesterday and I want to offer my most heartfelt condolences to his mom & dad, brother & family . - Posted by: Cynthia MacDonald (friend ) on: Oct 13, 2015

  • I traveled with Brett the whole summer of 1996. We met at "Bread & Puppet Theatre" in Vermont (he had been traveling with a good friend from New Brunswick "Ryan" I believe.) We started on our way down to Florida up to Lake Placid, NY and then heading out west. We all caught terrible head lice that summer and Brett shaved his beautiful dreads. We had a blast in "Baby Blue" his 1979 VW bus. We saw shows, met people and had the times of our life. A truly kind spirit. Generous, open minded and "with it!" He said I reminded him of his uncle at times (I was a bit older) So sad. I lost contact in 1996. Just did a search thinking of him and this popped up. Sorry for your loss. • He had a lot of potential and a good memory. If you did a favour for him, he would not forget; likewise, if you wronged him, he also wouldn't forget. - Posted by: Bruce P (Family) on: Mar 07, 2006
