Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAMES LAWRENCE MUIR February 6, 1920 - May 19, 2005 Devoted husband of Irene M. Muir Father of daughter Irene Palmer (husband Jim) and grandfather to Erin Father of son Jim M. Muir (wife Linda) and grandfather to Jed and Aimee Great-grandfather of Tarys Muir daughter of Jed and Syndi Brother of Bob Muir and brother-in-law of his wife Joyce Brother of Anne Moore (deceased 1994) and brother-in-law of her husband Art Brother of Tom Muir (deceased 2003) and brother-in-law of his wife Edith. After a few months of declining health, Jim passed away peacefully at St. Boniface Hospital, when his heart no longer had the strength to continue supporting his wonderful life. Jim lived his 85 years with a spring in his step, sporting a jacket, tie and matching hanky and with a friendly approachable style uniquely his own. He extended to family, friends and customers a dedication that was special and very principled. He loved to make them laugh with ALL his stories and one-liners. He believed in treating others with the dignity and respect he appreciated from others. In his personal life, he was a private person who enjoyed his family, his home, his car and travelling - often driving thousands of miles with his navigator, Irene. During the depression, Jim worked at a young age to help support his parents John (Jack) and Irene Muir (Harris). This was the start of a lifetime work ethic which he took to the grocery business, Christie's Biscuits, then to his 30+ years in paint sales with Stephen's Paints, C.I.L. and Interlab Paints. He worked until he was 72 when his personal scorecard indicated he had sold an enormous volume of paint for one lifetime. Jim enjoyed work! He always took pride in satisfying customers! He was a self-made man who believed that hard work, understanding the character of others, and integrity was the formula for success. Jim joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1939. Before leaving for overseas duty in Europe, he married Irene, who was his dance partner and inseparable friend for 62 years. When he returned home in 1946, he resumed his career and Jim and Irene started a family. They lived in Fort Garry for 30 years on Southwood and Holly Avenues and then Garnet Bay. Since selling their last house, they lived in St. Vital and Charleswood. They have always enjoyed their neighbours and they have many fond memories of each of their homes. We will remember him as proud, capable, and honest; a loving man who was dedicated to his family and especially to Irene, in good times and bad. We will miss his phone calls, his whistling, the coins he jingled in his pocket as he paced, his one-liners, his friendship, his advice, his great hugs, and everything about him. Respecting his wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. The family is having a private celebration of his life. We would like to extend a special thank you to the friends, neighbours, and business associates who have been a very important part of Jim and Irene's life. If friends wish, donations in Jim's memory can be made to the Salvation Army at PO Box 1932, Winnipeg, R3C 3R2 or to the Winnipeg Humane Society at 5 Kent St., Winnipeg, R2L 9Z9.
