LEONARD FLAGEL Our beloved father and grandfather passed away suddenly on June 11, 2005 at Morris General Hospital at the age of 85. Len was born in Emerson, the youngest of 10 children, to William and Henrietta Flagel. He attended school in Emerson and enlisted in The Canadian Armed Forces in 1940. He served with the 2nd Canadian Infantry, 3rd LAA Regiment, guarding the coast of England from enemy attack. After commando training, he was chosen to take part in the Dieppe Raid. He made it back to England where he rejoined his artillery unit. After D-Day, he and his unit fought their way through France, Holland and into Germany. He was very proud of his wartime service, but sometimes haunted by the memories. It was upon his return to Emerson where he met the love of his life, Ruth Walters. They were happily married for 47 years, until her passing in 1995. Len joined Canada Customs in 1947, and served in Emerson until his retirement in 1977. He was always active in the community, serving as Legion President, Master of the Masonic Lodge, on the volunteer fire department, town council, church council and many other community organizations. Despite several physical ailments in recent years, his determination to remain independent to the end was fulfilled. Left to mourn his passing are his children, Brian (Audrey) and Judy Rikkelman (Jan), his grandchildren Mark, Allison, Corinne and Matthew, one sister Ida, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife Ruth and his granddaughter Elise. A celebration of Len's life will be held at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Emerson on Thursday, June 16, at 2:00 p.m. with viewing held at the church one hour prior to service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund. The family would like to thank Len's Home Care workers ( the girls ) for their extraordinary care and attention over the years. Also Morris Hospital doctors and staff and the caring people in Emerson who were always there for him. Len loved to travel, he loved to laugh, he loved music, he loved life. He was a totally devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend. His was a life well lived. He will be greatly missed. Arrangements by Wiebe Funeral Home, Altona, MB. 1-204-324-5404
