GUSTAV (GUS) BOLLENBACH It is with broken hearts, we announce the passing of a kind and gentle man. Gus, beloved husband of Rosalie, died August 13, 2005. Besides his wife of 64 years, he leaves to cherish his memory his daughter Joanne; son-in-law Richard; daughter-in-law Nancy and four grandchildren, Pamela and Cynthia Martin, Errin and Steven Bollenback. He was predeceased by his parents, Philip and Emilie; five sisters; three brothers and in April, 2004 by his loving son Glenn. Gus was born in Austria on January 1, 1917, the youngest of 9 children. Due to adversity in their homeland, the surviving family members immigrated to Canada, settling in Winnipeg's north end. After learning English, (Dad was also fluent in German, Ukrainian and Polish) and furthering his education, Gus entered Moler Barber School, acquired his master operator's license, and continued in the barbering trade until his retirement in 1984. Dad was the owner/operator of Gus' Barber Shop on McPhillips St., where he formed lifelong friendships with his customers. On a church group outing in February of 1940, Gus met Rosalie (nee Weitzel), and they married August 2, 1941. The following year, Gus received his military assignment and served with the Pictou Highlanders in Gander, NFLD and Nassau, The Bahamas. Dad always felt proud to have been declared a naturalized Canadian citizen after his emigration. He remained patriotic his entire life. In younger years, Gus was an exceptional gardener and avid fisherman. But his greatest joy was in the relationships he shared with his family. We in turn were blessed to receive his gift of wisdom, guidance and unconditional love. His children and their friends, his grandchildren and their friends, would urge him to countlessly recall his childhood in Europe and his experiences in the Armed Forces. We never tired of the stories! Gus was a devout Christian, a follower of the way. He was a faithful member of St. John's Lutheran Church for nearly 60 years. Through our grief, we take comfort in the knowledge absolute that he has been welcomed into God's Kingdom. Deepest gratitude is extended to the doctors and staff at Seven Oaks Hospital and CancerCare, and to all the home care workers and palliative home care nurses, who so lovingly cared for dad. A service of remembrance will be held from St. John's Lutheran Church, 370 McKenzie St., on Wednesday, August 17 at 10:00 a.m. Following a luncheon, interment will take place at Brookside Cemetery. • Dear Grandpa, you were the kindest and most gentle soul I have ever known. I remember fondly always being in your barber shop as a wee kid on Sunday after church. Granny would always have a huge lunch for all of us to eat. And than I'd wonder off to look at the barber chairs with fascination and curiosity. I always felt loved and nurtured in your presence. Thank you for being a wonderful Grandfather. Love always, Pammy - Posted by: Pamela Martin (Grand daughter) on: Aug 18, 2025
