Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryNEIL FREDE HOVMAND Suddenly, at the age of 81, Neil Frede Hovmand peacefully passed away at his home on August 12, 2005. He was born February 23rd, 1924 in Denmark. During World War II Neil served in the Danish underground resistance. After the war, he completed his technical papers in Norway and quickly rose to the rank of Chief Engineer in the merchant marine. After travelling the world for several years, Neil moved to Canada in the 1950's and eventually settled in Winnipeg, where he was united in marriage to Hellen Komishon. After initially working for several years as an engineer with the Canadian National Railway in Winnipeg, Neil's entrepreneurial spirit took over. He started with a framing business and art gallery that evolved into a successful antique auction appraisal business. Neil remained actively involved in his business until he passed away. Neil was an active Rotarian for many years. He spent several years as the Sergeant at Arms of the downtown Rotary Club and was instrumental in helping to establish a Rotary Club in Transcona. Over the years he lent his time and skills as an auctioneer to numerous charities and he was a member of a number of clubs, including St. Charles Country Club where he and the family spent many enjoyable hours together. He also enjoyed many outdoor activities including fishing, hunting, golfing and cross country skiing. He certainly enjoyed, and was dedicated to, his family. Neil will be sadly missed by his wife Hellen, his daughter and her husband, Jane and Brian; his son and his wife, Thor and Nancy; and six grandchildren, being Meaghan, Elizabeth, Marsha, B.G. (Brian), Lindsay and Eric. Inga, his sister, and Eric, her husband have always been an important part of his life. He is further survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives, and many friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brother Hans. Memorial services for Neil F. Hovmand will be held at 3:00 pm, Thursday, August 18th at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave .
