Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHELGI B. JAKOBSON His family announce the passing of Helgi B. Jakobson at Gimli Community Health Centre on September 1, 2005. Helgi was born to Bodvar and Gudlaug (Eyolfson) Jakobsson on April 18, 1918 at his parents' homestead, Videy, in the Geysir district east of Arborg. Helgi attended Island School. He served with the Engineering Corps of the Canadian Reserve Army from 1942 to 1945, and then returned to work the farm. As a young man, Helgi had a gift for music and was a member of the Geysir Community Choir. He enjoyed taking part in some of the plays which were put on by the Geysir Theatre Group. Helgi inherited from his poetic father a thoughtful nature, a good command of the Icelandic language, and his deep convictions and personal ethics. Helgi was very loyal and was always gentle with children and animals. He was a favourite with his nieces and nephews and many cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Bodvar and Lauga; by his sisters and their husbands, Ingibjorg and Arvid Olsson, and Thorey and Sigmar Sigvaldason; and by his brother, Bjarki, and by his nephew, Gestur Jakobson. He will be fondly remembered. Helgi will be interred in the Haga Cemetery. A memorial service will be held in the Arborg Unitarian Church on Monday, September 5 at 2:00 p.m., followed by a time of fellowship at the Geysir Hall. The family would like to thank Dr. R.C. Patel and the staff of Johnson Memorial Hospital, and the staff of Betel Home for their compassionate care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or The Heart and Stroke Foundation. Gilbart Funeral Home, Gimli in care of arrangements.
